It's official. The Kings are staying.

After weeks of political drama and speculation, team officials said this morning they are dropping plans to move to Anaheim this year, co-owner George Maloof told The Bee.

"We are heading back to Sacramento. It was a tough decision. Ticket holders were reaching out to us, and it was the right thing to do to give it a shot at one more season," Maloof said during an interview in his office in the Palms casino in Las Vegas.

The move comes just six hours before a league-imposed 2 p.m. deadline for the Kings to file a formal request to the league to relocate the team for the coming season.

NBA commissioner David Stern told the Maloofs this was the right decision. George Maloof said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson now has to come up with an arena plan by March 1.

Johnson has scheduled an 11 a.m. press conference at City Hall.

I am so, so happy for y'all. Being in Memphis, we've heard this kind of stuff over the years too, although not to this level at all.

Great news, now we just all have to hope that there is a "next season"....

It's great news, but the time for celebration has to be short. All of this effort will be for nothing if we don't start putting some shovels into the ground and start building Arco III.

I am glad they are staying.

Call them stupid or spoiled, but the Maloof donkeys have managed to make the arena a big issue! It seems like this may have the support that is needed - finally. I remember writing on other forums how it seems that from afar many locals don't care or understand the impact of not having the kings. This whole issue has done a complete 180 and things look promising.

Let's hope this is a new era of Kings bball.

Well tommorow is my B-Day & the present I wanted the most has happened !
We are staying at least for 1 more year ! YES

So now we need to hope #1 that we get the Arena that will keep the KINGS in SAC forever or at least the next 20 + years or so .

So know my hopes with the draft is 1 of 4 options

# 1 draft Kyle Irving
# 2 draft Kemba Walker
# 3 draft Brandon Knight
# 4 trade our pick wich would land an elite relatively young player ( maybe D.Howard who knows he is unhappy & if we xould keep D.COUSINS next to him I would give whatever it took to keep him ) I realize getting Howard is very unlikely my point is if we trade our pick it better be for a major impact guy that will be in our very longterm future plans .

Next goal lets try & get JERRY SLOAN as our coach if not give PW 1 more year & if he does badly fire him & hire another coach after next season

Then I expect we will do some trades guys I could easily see being dealt at this point
1. CASSPI 2. BENO 3. GARCIA 4. J. THOMPSON ( Less likely but in the right deal its possible ) 5. D.Green ( I prefer him to stay as I still believe he will be a great assett to our teams future plans .
I also expect we will trade for a young star type player & also might trade in aquiring at least 1 furure 1st round pick .

I also expect the following through free agency

resign Thorton # 1 priority
resign Daly only if he will sign an affordable deal if not let him go or sign & trade him
Sign 1 OR 2 Key Free Agents that will vastly improve our team examples ( M.gasol , Battier , Prince , J.Crawford , J.RICHARDSON ( However I think we are better suited for getting great value through trades for the players we need rather than through free agency mostly as next years free agents are not that fantastic as a group . The real value trade wise we be teams dumping salaries to get under the cap wich will mean that greater players can be had at a better & more affordable price so this is the type of situation the G.P. should focus on more between the free agency vs. trade aspect !

Lastly as mention get the Arena done ! If needs me have the liars Maloofs sell the team & have the Kings stay in SacTown for years & years to come .

We scored a Big Win staying in SAC Today lets Celebrate ........................................

We still have a lot to be nervous about. I'm hoping we can get an arena deal done but we have to remember there are A LOT of people in the community that don't want any tax dollars going to arena. Also, given the Maloofs financial situation and the looming lockout this is going to be hard to get done.

At least we have KJ and were given another chance at this. If there is no arena deal this year none of us can complain about the Maloofs leaving. It will be their right.

Lets get it done Sac!

Kevin Johnson deserves a lot of the credit! Props to him and every Sacramento fan that wore their purple, participated with HereWeBuild/HereWeStay and those who wrote letters to whomever to keep our Kings where they belong. We've got 8-9 months to come up with an a arena plan. Let's get this done. Party tonight, plan tomorrow and every day after until the Kings have a new building.

Dont celebrate. Celebrating would be premature. OUR goal has not been reached yet. Dont get complacent with an 11 month (if we dont make the playoffs) extension.. Turn your attention to fighting your local councilman to get on board with arena plans.

Good day in Kings history, but a year stay is not a ruling in out favor.

this is great news guys

Finally the die-hard and loyal Sacramento fans are rewarded. Eventhough we have not reached our final goal, fans can take this moment to feel good and proud that atleast now the city will have some breathing time to work on arena deal. Hopefully KJ continues his mojo and gets something done which would be acceptable to all parties.

That being said, what do you think the offseason and 2011-12 look like for Kings?? Couple things that come to my mind :
Petrie said that kings will be more active in FA market and acquiring talent through trades and not just rely on draft. While this is good to hear, do you guys really think Maloofs will spend money? Honestly I doubt it.

The only possible scenario I can see them spending is if they are eventually planning to sell, they build a playoff contender and up the franchise value. But if they are not planning to sell, I doubt they will spend much money given their financial woes and the fact that they know whatever product they but on floor, Sacramento will still get a arena built for them. And if Sacramento is not able to, they will move, which was their initial plan.

this team still run by the maloofs, i dont think they will spend money in FA market to get good players, i expect another season of cheap management. we have a good GM in petrie, he had a good plan on this team but the big questions is will the maloofs willing to spend money to support petrie plan? i wish the kings get new team owner.

Pretty much my thoughts. Unfortunately I think we'll have the same discussion this time next year after another season in the cellar. The Maloofs are losing money because they can't afford to invest in the business, are being bled by their sink-hole of a casino operation in Vegas and have demonstrated that they really don't care about being in Sacramento. I personally would love to see the league take over the team, like they did with the Hornets, then sell it to an owner who is responsible (like Burkle).

Pretty much my thoughts. We should enjoy this for a little. There was a lot of momentum going the other way, and all hope seemed to be lost, and our prayers were answered. KJ deserves a ton of credit and we should enjoy this for a little.

But then, back to work.

I'm so happy right now, but if we have to go through this again next year . . . that will be a major buzz kill.
