*Edited for the actual player in the title.

Not that shocking that we waived Taylor. The guy just couldn't keep a spot in the rotation after the Thornton trade. He should find a place in this league though.

And of course this was to be expected with Thornton. Just have to hope nobody offers him a ridiculous offer sheet.

Taylor actually got more minutes when Thornton came over but that was because Tyreke was gone. I actually want to see the Kings keep Jermain around. He has a lot to work on but he has a bigger upside with his athleticism. He could have been a nice scorer off the bench.

Well yeah, but when both Tyreke and Marcus were there and healthy (which we're assuming they will be next year) Jermaine couldn't find any minutes.

I liked Taylor but I agree with letting him go. We have enough young talent that needs work. His roster spot should go to a Veteran, not a young guy who needs guidance and a lot of work.

Kings Extend Qualifying Offer to Marcus Thornton

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SACRAMENTO, CA, June 14, 2011 -- The Sacramento Kings today extended a qualifying offer to Marcus Thornton, making him a restricted free agent, according to Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.

Thornton, a two-year NBA veteran, averaged 21.3 points (.450 FGs, .361 3FGs, .805 FTs), 4.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.67 steals per game through 27 outings with the Kings last season, of which he started 23. He was acquired by Sacramento along with cash considerations from New Orleans on February 23, 2011, in exchange for Carl Landry.

In accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, in order for a team to retain its right of first refusal with respect to a restricted free agent, the team must tender the player a qualifying offer prior to June 30. A restricted free agent may sign an offer sheet with any team, but is subject to a right of first refusal with the team for which the player last played.

This is very true. Makes me change my thoughts.

Taylor is easily replaced, he might be available to pick up later depending on how the CBA shakes out.
I don't dislike him, but there are options that should be as good or better available.

Sacramento needs to aim higher if it's going to have any real chance of getting back to the playoffs.

It's not listed on Hoopshype but it's in the neighborhood of $1 million.

He'll obviously get offered more than that from someone. It all comes down to any team under the cap trying to steal him away. Hopefully not.

I don't think we had a choice to offer more than the QO, did we?

nope..

The QO is an offer on the table that allows the team to match any other club offer (restricted FA) not tendering a QO makes the player an unrestricted FA once free agency rolls around.

If the player takes the QO then they are unrestricted FA next year.

Teams cannot sign players till July 8 (probably later due to pending lockout)

Its not about the offer itself, its about testing the waters to see what his market value is. Remember, the Kings have money to spend this off season. But this time, they're being smart about it and being patient, instead of haphazardly throwing $80-100 million contracts at guys like they used to. The Kings are in the driver seat right now.

Salmons is playing small forward.. This should not effect us resigning Thornton.

Just out of curiousity. Does anyone know how much Sacramento is willing to match for Thornton?
