Peja announcers he'll retire

Post#1 » by SunsRback4Good » Tue Dec 20, 2011 1:17 am

Can't believe he's retiring I used to love watching him play for the Kings and i'm glad he won a championship last year. One of the greatest shooters of all time. ;) sucks he has back problems otherwise he would still be playing.

I felt like I should post this here since he used to play most of this career with Sacramento.

Looking forward to the day his jersey is hanging above the court in PBP, best 3pt shooter in team history

I wouldn't mind seeing Peja's jersey retired here! His role in those teams was just as big as Webber and Vlade. How about retiring it opening night once the new arena is finished? :D

Peja was once my favorite player, but I don't know about retiring his jersey. Chris was the superstar and Vlade was the glue made the whole team work. Peja was once a great player, but it's kind of a slippery slope. Do we then retire Bibby's jersey too? DC? Bobby?

Well at his peak, Peja was an all star and an MVP candidate. Can't say that about Bibby or the others.

If you remember, I was one of the few that wanted Peja traded, so I'm no fanboy of his, but when Webber was healthy, Peja was a crucial part of the team.

Yeah, but as much as we all love that team, and as much as we feel like we were screwed, how many jerseys can you retire for a team that never won a championship? I feel like you've got to keep your standards especially high for stuff like this, and while Peja was an MVP candidate, the team that year didn't get past the second round.

I don't know. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if it happened--especially when you consider that Petrie would surely have some say and has an undying love for Peja. I'm just not sure it should happen.

I guess we should take down Mitch Richmond's jersey then.

No, I'm not saying we shouldn't retire anyone from that team. I'm saying a third guy may be too much.

Mitch was worth retiring because he was the only bright spot for the franchise for about a decade.

I understand your argument, and if we were the Lakers, I would completely agree with you, but we're not. Our heroes are much fewer and farther between, so in my opinion, the few we do have should be celebrated.

I wouldn't be upset if Peja's jersey weren't retired, but if it was, I think it would be deserving. Peja does have a legacy as being one of the greatest shooters ever, and played a team that will be long remembered around the world by the style they played and being one of the, if not the best team ever not to win a championship.

I just think it might be good for us to have the kinds of standards that great franchises have, you know? I guess in my dumb head, I feel like having those higher standards will lead to higher standards for the franchise in general or something.

I don't know. Sounds kinda dumb now that I type it out like that.

I do completely understand your argument. Perhaps I have my homer glasses on, but that team truly was special, and not just in Kings' history, but in NBA history, and when you think of that team, the guys that immediately come to mind are Webber, Vlade and Peja. I think it's more of a testament to how awesome that team was than a lessening of standards if Peja's jersey were to be retired here.

(And something else that adds to Peja's legacy that I haven't mentioned is that he's one of the great international players of the NBA, and certainly played a large part in popularizing the NBA to a wider audience outside of the US)

I would be fine with the Kings retiring Peja's number. Has anyone wore 16 since?

Interesting pool about Peja...

Should the Kings retire Peja Stojakovic's No. 16 jersey?

Yes 307 (65%)
No 168 (35%)
Total 475 (100%)

Peja was and still is one of my favorite players... and Kings from that Peja, Vlade, Webber, Bibby, Williams, D C, period was just joy to watch... I can't even remember how many times I didn't sleep whole night just to watch them (most of NBA games in Serbia start 01:00 or 02:00) and then go to school early in the morning... and whole country watch Kings then... it was crazy... it still is the most popular NBA team in Serbia by far....

I dont know... I would like for him that Kings retire his jersey... but I understand people who thinks otherwise.

Return to Sacramento Kings
