DeMarcus Cousins preps for Team USA and new NBA season

I absolutely LOVE seeing this. if there's one major thing working for Smart, is his connection with DeMarcus and him being able to motivate and push him to becoming the best he can be.

Just proud to see this kid proving all doubters before the draft wrong about all the long list of "red flags".

Being a leader by example, working his tail off, embracing that role of the leader, expecting and demanding from himself before anyone else to lead us back into the playoffs.

That's what you want to see from your franchise player. Mad props for Big-Cuz.

There is an excitement and buzz around the Sacramento Kings right now following the recent announcement of DeMarcus Cousins making Team USA’s Select Team. While he wasn’t named a finalist for the National Team, Cousins hasn’t given up hope on London yet and seems determined to earn a chance to represent his country.

“I’m very excited,” Cousins said. “I feel like I have a legitimate chance to go in and actually earn a spot for the team. So I’m going to go in, try to earn a spot.”

Cousins isn’t alone in his hunt to become the first King to compete in the Olympics since Mitch Richmond back in 1996. It appears that the owners have been lobbying for him behind closed doors as well.

“I spoke to (director of USA Basketball) Jerry Colangelo and pushed for DeMarcus to be on the Select Team,” Gavin Maloof said following Wednesday night’s NBA Draft Lottery festivities. “I think that’s invaluable for him. The experience is incredible because he’s playing with the best talent in the world. To know what it means to be a pro, (and to work with) the best coaching staff…it’s invaluable for him.”

Cousins’ chances of making the final roster aren’t great. But with veteran big men like Dwight Howard, LaMarcus Aldridge and Andrew Bynum skipping the summer games, Team USA is left a little weak on its frontline. Cousins is hoping his play on the practice squad turns heads.

For some of those around Cousins, seeing him play in London would be exciting, but secondary. For Kings head coach Keith Smart, it is about Cousins taking the next step as a player and person.

“I just want him to be involved in the experience,” Smart said. “Being around those players will show him that, you may think you’re working hard or may think you’re 100-percent committed, (but) until you get around some guys who are already proven pros in the NBA, you don’t really understand that.”

The idea isn’t lost on Cousins. He too has an agenda for his summer’s activities. Cousins returned to Sacramento last week and began an early offseason training program with Kings strength and conditioning coach Daniel Shapiro. Thursday was a lifting day and when we caught up with Cousins on Friday, he was sore from the previous day’s workout.

Cousins seems to understand that he is entering a new phase in his career. A phase where potential must translate to wins and he appears ready to take on the challenge.

“(I just want to) go in and learn from some of the elite guys in this league,” Cousins said. “How to work, how to be a leader, how to make your teammates better and how to be a better teammate – all of that. I’m definitely going to try to go in there and learn something.”

It is promising to hear these words come from Cousins. For the Kings to reach the next level, he does need to work on skills like leadership and making his teammates better. There is a hunger behinds Cousins’ words and to see him mapping out his goals is very encouraging.

So, is Smart proud of his young center?

“I’m happy for him,” Smart said Friday afternoon. “I’m happy that he was really consistent in his play this year and got the attention to get a chance to be selected. But also, it’s important that he continues to grow as a pro and I think having a chance to go to the Select Team, to be around some of the other Olympians, guys who are at the top of our league – to be out there, sitting with these guys, talking about playing, will benefit him in the long run.”

The Maloof family already has plans to attend the Olympic games this summer. While they aren’t sure if one of their own will be in attendance, they are pulling hard for Cousins.

“I hope to see DeMarcus there,” Gavin Maloof said. “I hope he makes it.”

Kings fans probably feel the same way. The Select Team is a big step for Cousins. The Olympic team would be even bigger. This offseason might just be what the doctor ordered for Cousins to make the leap and become an elite NBA player.

Great article, all positive for Cousins which is a good thing.

Not to take away from this but isnt the Olymipcs where great players on crappy teams go to talk about joining forces? Think Miami.

I don't doubt it but I think we will be fine in the next couple of years. I think this team is going to improve by a lot soon.

Cousins doesn't strike me as that kind of guy. He doesn't want to do things the easy way, and I also think he genuinely likes Sacramento. If he ever leaves, it'll be because of the Maloofs, and in that case I wouldn't blame him a bit.

Anyway... The playoffs aren't even over yet and he's already back in town working on getting better and silencing his haters. He's been the one bright spot for us Kings fans and I know he'll give us much to cheer about this coming season (and maybe even sooner if he makes it to London!).

Update:

http://www.sacandco.net/news/article/20 ... experience

Kobe is his biggest supporter :o

Kobe Bryant is among Cousins' biggest supporters and believes he could provide the team with much needed physicality in international play.

"European basketball is extremely physical," Bryant said. "He brings a physicality to the game that really changes the energy of the game. He's not afraid to make contact, he's not afraid to upset guys and kind of make the game uncomfortable."

Bryant said because of Cousins size and that physicality - and his ability to shoot, he'd love to have Cousins on the team in the London games.

DeMarcus Cousins was involved with USA Basketball as a member of the Select Team -- a group of younger players who helped the Olympic team prepare.

"He needs to mature as a person (and) as a player if he's going to have an outstanding NBA career," USA basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said Saturday. "Before there's discussion about him being part of our program, he has a lot of building to do. … He has a lot of growing up to do.”

What a downer. Seems like Colangelo has it out for Cousins.

“He fouled the s --- outta everyone,” Carmelo Anthony said, according to a tweet from Sean Cunningham, a sports reporter for ABC’s Sacramento affiliate (via Pro Basketball Talk).

I was thinking the exact same thing. In this era in the NBA it's all about the pussy wings that sit on the 3 point line and do fancy between the legs isos. Cousins is more of an old school center that likes to bang and play tough. Kobe played with the physical bigs in the league like Shaq, Zo, etc and he knows what that's like, which is why I think he complimented Cousins. Melo on the other hand isn't use to centers like Cousins because there are very few like that in the league which is why he's crying imo.

Carmelo crying about guys getting physical with him is nothing new.

He's typical of guys who are big for their position then try to go up against a REAL big man. Wah wah!

As far as Colangelo goes, show me all those rings he has for his teams again? Oh yeah, that's right...HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY!!!

Getting to use the top talent in the WORLD to form your team does not make you a superior judge of talent.

Yeah, I'll take a center with heart and attitude over his wussy nature any day. If Shaq was rough in practice don't think anyone says a word. Hopefully this fires up Cuz even more.

Jesus, guys. If you actually bothered to watch the videos, you'd see Carmelo wasn't mad at all.

Anyway, figured this is worth posting, as much as we're probably all trying to ignore it: http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/22 ... r_Team_USA

Mike Krzyzewski declined to close the door on Cousins’ future Olympic hopes.

"He has a talent. He's big. He's young," Krzyzewski said. "You don't know what an experience will do for someone. You're hope it will open their eyes to new things. I think that's what's it done for all players who have participated for the United States. His time here, playing in this culture and against these guys, sometimes can have a positive change for all the players participating. Hopefully, it has it on him and other others."

No, I never said that DeMarcus does not have growth and maturing to do.

I said Colangelo is a dumbass who hates traditional bigs.

So is Coach K.

Neither of these guys likes a guy like DeMarcus anyway. There was no way that he was gonna make the team this year as long as they are in charge. Seriously. Given the option, they would have nobody on the team below six four and above six eight.

And I say again - exactly HOW MANY professional championships has either guy won?

ZERO!

Really Will, they were gonna take Anthony Davis and keep him on injured to get him "experience" for 2016 so we don't get the **** kicked out of us then. It's a freaking miracle that some of the quality players like Noah are gonna miss the games because we really would get our asses kicked bad running into the Gasol's and the like game after game under international rules.

These two things totally contradict each other. Davis is arguably a more traditional big than Demarcus in that he's a defensive presence and an elite finisher. There are many ways in which Cuz isn't traditional at all.

And what evidence do you have that both of those guys didn't like Demarcus before this?

And what relevance does their NBA championship experience have? Not only is this international ball, but that doesn't really mean anything with respect to them assessing Cuz's maturity.

Anyone pissed at Carmelo should watch that, clears up context.

Return to Sacramento Kings
