Ownership mulls it over for a bit, but I'm confident they give it to him.

I'm not as confident that NBA 3.0 includes being bullied into giving underachieving malcontents what they want, especially after just buying the team for a record valuation and investing in a new arena for a total of over a half a billion dollars. A world class talent, zero question, but also a world class pain in the ass. Vivek certainly wants to do things his way, and not a single soul was safe from Vivek's purge of the management and coaching staffs. No reason to think that anyone on the roster is safe either.

P.S. How nice is it to be discussing giving out max deals instead of discussing who's next on the Maloof's relocation radar?

Definitely a time to be more optimistic.

On that note, I'd like to think that the new management can play this game as well as Cousins (read Fegan) is playing it. I'm thinking of approaching the negotiations by acknowledging all the ways in which Cousins fits a player deserving a max contract. Once his ceiling has been established, I then start backing away by discussing all of the ways Cousins is not a player deserving a max contract. Point out how most teams in the league still consider him as much of a risk as he was in the draft, despite his talent. How his attitude is a major impediment to his reaching his full potential and why should the Kings bargain on him reaching his potential. Ideally, the negotiations will land on place that is acceptable for both parties.

If not, I am indeed confident that D'Allesandro can bargain Cousins for some nice pieces in a trade.

I dont mind if a player wants to get a max contract but also shows he deserves it and works hard for it...but demanding a trade if its not done and trying to pressure a team who has stuck with him regardless of his immature behavior is just bullcrap! It may be cuz saying it or his agent saying it but i hope vivek dont bow down to these fools...

The problem with this is that Fegan knows it's irrelevant. Some team out there will be willing to max Cuz out, and all parties involved likely know this. It leaves the Kings in a tough bargaining position.

I wish the extension deadline went to the all-star break so we could see if Cuz is at least capable of behaving himself for a couple months.

Cuz is what we need to build around. He is deserving of a max deal. I think its his agent more pressing the trade demand button than him, just to make sure he gets one. He's playing great for basically nothing. New front office/new coach we just have to have faith in it. He is def the centerpiece of something good if we can get em running on all cylinders

DMCs attitude (downside) is completely relevant. Perhaps there is a team willing to max Cuz out. If there is, then that makes him a pretty good bargaining chip. But I'm struggling to think of a team that is willing to gamble on him any more than the Kings have at this point. If they're out there, I'm sure D'Alessandro will get something valuable out of them for DMC. Calling for a max contract is just a strategy by Fegan. Something to negotiate around. Almost everyone knows that DMCs ceiling is somewhere in the stratosphere. But everyone also knows (including Fegan) that DMC is his own worst enemy and that it is entirely likely that ceiling will not be realized.

Again, this is just a game within the game. Now that we have a front office that is smart and willing to make the Kings a competitive team, I'm optimistic about whatever outcome this little drama brings.

Wonder what type of money Greg Monroe will be commanding in an extension. I think that will determine what we'd have to pay Cousins. If Detroit is willing to give Monroe a max deal, that's where the market sets the bar.

Can they write in contingencies/kickers in his contract? DMC can earn max money if he plays X amount of games, does not get more than X amount of technicals, etc.

As long as someone out there is willing to max Cousins out, that's what Fegan will rely on--regardless of anything else. I can't see this ending in any way but Cuz getting a max somewhere. If we won't pay it, someone else will.

Actually, I want to resolve my ignorance on this issue. What would a "max" deal for Cousins look like on paper? Are there different kinds of max deals depending on the seniority and production of the player, or does "max deal" mean that we pay Cuz like a superstar (Dwight, Lebron, Kobe, Durant, etc.), even though he has yet to, and may never reach that potential? Is it possible to negotiate the terms of a "max deal" as 408 suggests above? Also, would a sign and trade work in this situation?

His deal would be similar to Roy Hibberts per year, probably average of 14 or 15 per year over 4-5 years. There are different degrees of max contracts depending on how long you are in the league. The longer you are in the more you get paid.

In this situation you would prefer for the market to set the price and let that deal run out but every agent would prefer the guarantees of an extension. Honestly whether Cousins is paid 13 million a year or 15, does it matter? He's getting paid by someone either way. I think he can agree to an extension and then be traded.

I think he will get a max contract no problem. And I think we should give it to him. If bums like Deandre Jordan and Mcgee can get 10 million i don't see a reason not to max out cousins. Hell we Paid Kenny Thomas 7 Million per year to sit the bench and be a terrible player for about double the money we will get substantially more production.

why would we give a guy a max contract who hasn't proven anything? he is not a team player and hasn't made an all star team yet. granted, he has the talent to make multiple in the future, he is a huge risk based on his track record as far as his attitude on and off the court (cancer).

We still have a year to decide. He doesn't become a RFA until the 2014-15 season anyways. We should probably let him play out this year with no extension, and if he plays up to it, max him out.

We did the same with Tyreke. I see no point in giving him a max contract now since the overall consensus is that he'll get close to that amount anyways.

^^the point is that we don't have a year to decide Faegan has made it clear that we extend cousins now with a max contract extension or he will be demanding a trade.

I would rather wait the year as well but that isn't an option.

Well, they'll need some sort of evaluation before signing him to a max contract. Midseason would be the more suitable option.
