Whose the better starting PG

Post#1 » by triple_threat » Mon Oct 28, 2013 9:04 pm

Isiaah thomas or vasquez? I am not a close kings follower thats why i'm asking you guys? Who do you think is better. I think vasquezed is pegged as the starter, but does thomas have a chance to win the spot? If not, will he still get signicant minutes?

Thomas will definitely get some minutes, and you can play them both at the same time. Thomas would just play off the ball in that scenario and guard the smaller player on D. Most of us have learned not to underestimate IT, and if he wins the spot out, would not be a shocker.

Vasquez on paper is the better fit to run a cohesive offense atm, we want to spread the floor and work from Cuz out if possible. Pat and McLemore are more dangerous with Vasquez at the helm as well.

I think Isaiah is the better player, but Vazquez is probably the best fit to start, and Isaiah gives us a substantial boost coming off the bench once Malone starts his substitutions.

I wouldn't be surprised however if Malone starts Isaiah at some point just because his defense is miles ahead of Vazquez's, and that's even including the significant size difference between the two.

This is more or less my opinion, although I think we'd be better off with Vasquez guarding SGs and Thornton guarding PGs. Either way it won't be a great defensive combo of course, but it takes care of Marcus' lack of size and Vasquez's lack of quickness.

But yeah, if you're asking for fantasy reasons, Isaiah should get plenty of minutes. Right now, he has a pretty good argument for being the team's second best player.

Vasquez, no question. But it's not a knock on IT even, he is looking good in that 6th man spark plug role. You don't want IT playing that way next to Cousins, been there, done that. Having a 5'9" guard taking all the shots when your franchise is out in no mans land and you have actual talent at SG is a surefire way to stay stuck for the long haul. If you were winning with it by all means stick away but there weren't, and they won't. An IT/JT/McLemore bench has major potential IMO. They will be way better than the other teams bench unit most nights.

Also, just because you don't start doesn't mean you won't finish the game. Yep, next BoJax material for sure.

I noticed in that Clippers game just how much versatility Vasquez gives this team. The same kind of versatility they should've gotten out of Tryeke actually. He was even guarding some PF's in that game when the defense was out of position and he held his own in some of the plays. Vasquez was also guarding the G or SF stashed off the ball at the corner 3. I always thought Thornton did a decent job on PG's and I think Vasquez will handle SG's just fine. I like the idea of a switch defense where you give players different looks and this team can possibly do that depending on the situation.

Just like I've thought for the last 3 years though, this teams defense will be dictated by it's offense. The second half of that Clippers game is a perfect example. When they slowed it down and played smart they weren't getting destroyed on the other end anymore. Control the game and regardless of who their backcourt tandem is they'll just up into at least the middle of the league defensively from day 1.

Vasquez is starter material, IMO, and IT seems to thrive with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder when he's fighting for minutes.

I would like to add something that I haven't seen many people mention is that ITs shooting is even better this season/preseason. His form looks almost perfect and speed at which he pulls the trigger has been amazing.

Both guys will be getting 25+ minutes a game. Isaiah's probably our second best player so I'd say its likely he finishes the game for us. Whether he finishes next to McLemore, Thornton, or Vasquez is probably a function of game situation at the time.
