Official Trade Discussion thread

Not being knee-jerk with anything, just thought we could use a thread like this in general.

I was looking towards out future, and here's what I think our plan is.

1) Get a high pick this year, and pick well.

2) And then the interesting part. Next year, we'll have a ton of expiring contracts. Hayes/Outlaw/Thornton/LRMAM combine for over 20mil in expirings--more than we'd likely ever need, but good to have nonethless. It could theoretically be enough to take on a star and a bad contract. I think that pick and whoever we can get in a trade here (probably next summer) could, along with Cuz and McLemore, be our main pieces for the future, along with IT coming off the bench (would want to re-sign him).

Any other trade thoughts?

I am interested in seeing what Coach Malone is going to do in the near future regarding our starting lineup and rotation. Not saying we are going to become a powerhouse or anything but if his changes bring a more consistent and winning atmosphere, that is when we can see who really needs to be traded. If we decide to start BigMac and his backup is going to be Jimmer (which I hope is the case), then a small deal involving Marcus Thorton and JT or Hayes to bring in a serviceable BIG should be done.

Basically IMO, the 'Need to go List' involves : Salmons, Thorton, Hayes, Outlaw, and JT.

As far as bigs go, I don't think too many are expendable but what would you think about this deal with Memphis.

We give up Jason Thompson, Patrick Patterson and Travis Outlaw in return for Ed Davis and Kosta Koufos.

I think the addition of Davis and Koufos would strengthen our defense down low with Davis/Cousins starting, Landry/Koufos backing up (Landry only coming off the bench to balance the front court), and Hayes playing spot minutes. We lose the ability to really stretch the floor with Patterson but how well has been playing this year anyway?

Maybe I'm being pessimistic... but I just do not see us being able to move Thornton.

Thornton and JT for JaVale McGee.

Yes, we pick up some crazy, but we know minority owner Shaq LOVES his game. The basketball reason is that he could conceivably play the athletic shot blocking PF.

DMC, Jimmer, McGee... instantly moves us up on the watchability scale for pure entertainment value.

I think they some team desperate for scoring off the bench might take him. We definitely won't be getting anything valuable in return. Probably have to give up a 2nd for a team just to take him.

Trying to dump the unwanted...

Trade Marcus Thornton & Jason Thompson to Grizzlies for Zach Randolph
- I believe Memphis is looking to dump Z-Bo. Ben is future SG so MT goes & JT whines too much.
Trade Patrick Patterson & John Salmons to Rockets for Omer Asik
Asik not a good fit next to Dwight. Houston looking for stretch 4 gets one their familiar with at cheap price & John is essentially expiring.

Grevis Vasquez/Isaiah Thomas/Ray McCallum
Ben McLemore/Jimmer Fredette
Luc Mbah Moute/Travis Outlaw
DeMarcus Cousins/Zach Randolph/Carl Landry
Omer Asik/Chuck Hayes/Hamady Ndiaye

League minimum 13 guys under contract. Landry is out a long time.

10 man rotation would be...
PG Vasquez
SG McLemore
SF Moute
PF Cousins
C Asik
6th Thomas
7th Randolph
8th Outlaw
9th Fredette
10th Hayes

Land 2nd pick and draft Jabari Parker.

Wishful thinking. I came into season excited but we need something to cheer for. Pete needs to shake things up quick.

DCUZ is a Center in today's league. Him and Asik would be very odd together. If we can just get a SF that can knock down open shots.....

I believe the main thing we should be looking at is the best possible defensive SF we can get with any package of Vasquez, Thornton, Salmons, JT, Hayes. That is it.
Obviously Landry is in the future plans as he was just signed and we shouldn't worry about how deep we are at a position at any moment throughout the season, we aren't going to win so the only aims should be getting pieces for the future and continually improving the pieces on the roster. If that means we sign a couple of guys till the end of the season so be it, there is plenty of guys in the NBDL that would love to sit on the bench of an NBA team and maybe pick up a couple of minutes. But the goal should be finding a defensive SF.
However at the end of the day we only have one position covered with the 2nd looking more likely in McLemore so if an upgrade came along we should do it.
At this point I see the only long term guys being here
C. Cousins
PF
SG. McLemore
PG
Bench IT
Bench Landry
After that the rest will get cleared out.

Just a hypothetical question. Going off of PakwAn's list and say we're in position to draft top 2 this year would you guys rather go after a defensive power forward (Ibaka, Henson, Gibson) and draft Jabari? Or target a defensive/all around SF (Chandler, Batum) and draft someone like Randle? I know the college season just started but just curious what your guys' preference would be

if we commit to him as a 3, not a 4, then I would be all for it.

I don't see any big trades for us this year unless we try and dump Vasquez. Only real trade option the Kings have is Jimmer who probably wont command much. At this point I believe the Kings roster may get a minor tweak but this is probably the roster we are rolling with for the rest of the season.

To me the most mind boggling stat so far is our starting PF has yet to shoot a free throw! Landry will be a welcome sight once he is back.

Patterson could pose value if he was playing decent however he is having a horrible start to a contract year.

I'll take any help we can get and would be thrilled if either of them are available to us at our spot.

With that said, I think having a better shot blocking presence is a better fit with the team we have now...mainly with DMC. As good as Demarcus is at taking charges, I don't think he should defend that way. He rarely (and this is not based on any stats) gets any of those calls to go his, and would be better off helping to funnel his man towards a shot blocker. He already gets too many fouls, and when it's obviously a charge and the call is against him, he starts to implode and hurts the team.

Ibaka would be a great fit as he can defend most centers. I wouldn't mind having John Henson either, but he's definitely a couple tiers lower than Ibaka.

Don't forget, you can watch Wiggins vs Parker tonight when Duke and Kansas square up in the Champions Classic!

Two guys I'd have my eye on are McGee and Sanders if I were GM. Both are questionable value at this point though. Still, if you could unload some of the PF mess on this team done then what's the hurt.

Could have had Henson or Drummond for that matter too. :x

I like Gibson, I think he'd be one of the best fits out there next to Cuz. Does some things Cuz wants in the player next to him and allows Cuz to stay at C.

He's a better 4 and this team has a 4 like him already in Patterson. Could be an interesting fit but you'd have to hope he's just looks so bad because he's a production player not getting enough opportunities. I'm sure it has something to do with it.

JT & Thorton are pretty much immovable due to MT costs, and JT's 4 years remaining. We would have to go after an overpaid fella who wants out of his current situation, or accept an equally garbage of a contract.

Salmons is off the books besides the 1 million guaranteed next year.

Funny some of us here knew that JT and MT contracts were bloated, and glad the homerisim is finally leaving.

To give you an idea about MT.

Last year he was ranked....when compared to other guards and only guards

84th in FG%, 61st in 3pt%, 77th in rebounds, 140th in assists....

So you have a chucker, who percentage wise is not that good, 83 other guards shoot better from the 2 and 60 with the 3.......and he is basically dead last in assists...and plays poor D....and this season is absolute garbage.

Our current contract mess

Marcus Thornton $8,165,000 $8,697,500
Jason Thompson $5,643,750 $6,037,500 $6,431,250 $6,825,000
Chuck Hayes $5,722,500 $5,958,750
John Salmons $7,580,000
Carl Landry $6,750,000 $6,750,000 $6,750,000 $6,750,000

So rather than signing a high quality NBA player you are left with eclectic junk, basically crippling you from being able to do anything. Who knows what opportunities you will miss out on by paying fellas like these guys. Much better off signing like 3 guys at 10 million per than 5 pieces of junk for 33 million plus....and always staying on the cheap until you can pay a man.

To give you an idea of the Kings of old 2002-2003, some of the supporting casts pay
Vlade Divac $11,248,076
Mike Bibby $8,500,000
Doug Christie $6,250,000
Peja $5,625,000
Bobby Jackson $2,700,000

Cost is about the same.
