Ben McLemore - season review

Post#1 » by hisalness56 » Tue Jun 10, 2014 6:35 pm

Hey guys - actually a wiz fan here but was and still am a big fan of McLemore. I didn't get to watch a lot of Kings games being on the east coast but from what I did see he definitely improved as the season went on. Those of you that did see alot... what did you think of the progress he made as the season went on and what do you think he can be both next season and beyond?

To me he looked like the classic 3rd year break out kind of guy.

1st year under preforms because the game is too fast for him. But he shows flashes of potebtial.

2nd year he displays some consistency in a larger role but doesn't break out.

3rd year break out.

What type of break out are you expecting?

I would expect something similar to demar derozan but with 3pt shooting and slightly better defense. And he will remain a mediocre ball handler.

My opinion is that the game was just too fast for McLemore this year. It should slow down for him as he gets more experience and that will allow all of natural talents to surface.

Athletically he has the tools to be the best SG in the league at some point. I've never seen bricks look so good.

I'm not sure what to expect, but you've got to give a guy with his athleticism a shot, he needs more floor time and we should see it this year if it is going to happen, if there is not drastic improvement, put him on the list of fellas who are major disappointments.

Him and Beal both have such pretty strokes. Beal made big strides with his 3pt % in year 2 I think McLemore can do the same

I think with Ben it will be all or nothing, I'm not sure he is gonna last long in the league if it doesn't come together here soon.

This should be a low risk gamble for those interested.

I'd say you have a 25% shot at a legitimate all star here, or near 75% out of the league in 3-4 years fella. Not bad odds considering so few turn out to be studs in the NBA. 25% is good odds.

IMO Major disappointment. Went from a prospect who Kings fans felt could be one of the steals of the draft to looking like a bust and being maybe the worst SG in the league to start.

When a prospect has the rookie season that Ben had the chances of him being a very good player are not good. You can point to Peja or whatever, but these are outliers. If you compared Ben's rookie season to the rookie season of all other starting sgs in the NBA it would not look too good for Ben. He has holes in his game IMO that might not be rectified, like handles and BBIQ etc. IMO this is why as a rookie he has potentially popped up in trade rumors

Where does this leave us now? He needs to be earning his time off the bench. I can't think of many other scenarios where teams literally force kids who can't currently play in the NBA into the starting lineup because its not fair to the other members of the team, fans etc. If I personally don't think Ben will pan out I'm not going to want to wait 3-4 years of one of the worst shooting guards in the league to find out. I don't have that patience as a fan. I don't think it was ever the intention of the FO either

IMO after what Ben has shown the organization cannot rely on him being solid, and they have to plan for otherwise. They need to bring other players who will help our core at that position, and if Ben slowly materializes off the bench that will be an additive and you can deal with the glut at SG then.

Ben made big improvements in the last 2 months. I think he will be fine...

It was great to see him end the season on a high note and ride that confidence into the off season.

He did show improvement.

We have little to lose, unless we do something ballsy like go after Love, and he somehow remained on the roster.

So I'd let him play out next season, all or nothing.

Not really sure what to think of Ben. He has great athleticism, defensive potential and very good shooting form. Also just had a terrible rookie season. He needs to work on his perimeter defense, passing/playmaking, dribbling and court awareness. Some of this will improve just with experience and practice, but I now see Ben as a project. I'd be happy if he just ends up as good as Beal.

It was awful but I'm not worried and I'll show you why.

Richard Hamilton (7th pick)
-1st year: 9 points per game
-2nd year: 18 points per game
-3rd year: 20 points per game

DeMar DeRozan (6th pick)
-1st year: 8 points per game
-2nd year: 17 points per game
...
-5th year: 23 points per game

Tracy McGrady (9th pick)
-1st year: 7 points per game
-2nd year: 9 points per game
-3rd year 15 points per game
-4th year: 27 points per game

Paul George (10th pick)
-1st year: 8 points per game
-2nd year: 12 points per game
-3rd year: 17 points per game
-4th year: 22 points per game

Joe Johnson (10th pick)
-1st year: 10 points per game
-2nd year: 6 points per game
-3rd year: 10 points per game
-4th year: 17 points per game

The list goes on and on. To me, McLemore seems like the type of guy who will develop along a trajectory like one of these guys. That's not to say they have similar games. The issue becomes whether Kings fans have the patience to wait until potentially year 3 or 4 for him to be a big time player. I think unless we can turn him into someone like Love or Rondo, we wait it out.

None of those guys were as remotely inefficient as Ben was from the field and I'm guessing defensively

Charlotte fan here. Would you guys take the 24th pick in this years draft and maybe Gerald Henderson for him, or something of that nature?

Probably not since Henderson may have already peaked and McLemore has a lot of undeveloped potential.

Plus, I think us looking for a veteran SG was to give McLemore a guy to learn from. Not to replace him.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Ben's improvement coincided with playing alongside McCallum. Ben's success seems to be dictated on whether he is put in spots and positions where he can play and perform comfortably. For that he currently needs teammates that can put him in those positions. This is a limitation with putting Ben next to IT, but I'm hoping as Ben develops he will either learn how to be comfortable in broader range of scenarios, or create in-game opportunities without the ball in which he will be comfortable with.

Butler is a very good defensive player
