I took a shot at a realistic free agency period. Give your thoughts and do one of your own. Try to be real about who would sign with us. We probably aren't gonna get any grade A FA to sign with us.

I took into account fit, money, rumors, likely hood of signing with OUR team and style of play. We start with 8.5 in cap room. We waive Stockton after summer league. Send him back to Dleague. Now have 9.5m

First move I made is to trade Jason Thompson to Det for Anthony Tolliver. 6'8 240 Tolliver is a finesse stretch 4 that plays defense and shoots the 3 that we have been looking for. He is a FA next yr and makes 3m this yr. Why do the Pistons do this? They signed Ilyasova to fill that role. They currently have Drummond Ilyasova and Cartier Martin in the front court signed before FA with a ton of cap space (over 35mil). Thompson give them a versatile big to play next to Drummond as insurance should they strike out on the high priced PF's on the market. We save 3.5 mil on the cap.

Cap 13mil

I see our needs as:
1. A backup 3 that can shoot the 3 and defend the wing. If he can play or guard the 2 in situations it is a major plus.
2. We need versatility at the guard position. Meaning a combo guard that can handle the ball and play 2 at times.
3. A BBB (back-up big body). It would be nice to get a young back-up big that can score, plays defense at the rim and we can develop behind DMC, WCS and Moreland.
4. More athletic guys that will defend, run the floor and shoot the 3.

1. I know alot of people want to resign Casspi because he is a good fit with the team in the locker room but I think the money can be used on a better fit for the position. I go for Gerald Green from the Suns. 6'8, shoot the 3 well, can guard and played the 2 at time for the Suns and is a high character guy. He is in his prime at 29 and would be willing to sign a multi yr contract for a role role and the right price. I'd offer 4yrs 14m with club opts after 2yrs.

2. We need insurance in case McCallum and Stauskas struggle again and someone to play next to Collison at times as a 2nd ball handler. I would love to chase Rodney Stuckey but he has made it clear he wants more money then we'll spend and wants to play for a contender. I go for Donald Sloan. 27 yo 6'3 205. Can run the team with Collison not in the game. shoot the from the perimeter and play double pg sets when needed. Made min last yr and would get alittle more in offers this yr. 2 yrs 4mil.

3. Need a big that can play 5 or 4 with the the size to play in the low post and defend the rim. He is mostly insurance if DMC or WCS gets injured. Would be nice to find a young big we can sign and develop. I go for Kyle O'Quinn from the Magic. I describe his game as a poor man's Cousins but is a better rim protector. 25yo 6'10 245. Can be productive in spurts and we would only need him for 15-20 mins a gm at the most with injuries. He is a restricted free agent and Orlando has 5 front court players under contract so we won't have to bite to hard to scare them off IMO. 4 yrs 15m

4. Quincy Acy is the last guy I sign to provide insurance at the 3-4 position. Showed promise for us 2 yrs ago and built upon that last yr with NYK. Improved all aspects of his game with more minutes. Has expressed desired to return to SAC. 6'7 235 24yo. we can sign him to a 3-4yr deal 1.5m a yr.

With Acy, Tolliver, Green and and Moreland signed, Landry becomes expendable. We can keep him, try to trade him for a 2nd rd draft pick or stretch him. We can sign Miller with the Room Mid-Level Exception and still have 1m to sign a vet if injury deems it necessary.

This is a much more balanced and versatile roster with guys can shoot and defend. Athletes at every level to get out and run. Leaves room to add talent in later yrs thru the draft at key positions. We also target guys that can help us this yr that WILL sign with us regardless of the current outside perception of our organization.

I dig it, and many of those names have already been discussed by a few posters on here. I'm not sure Detroit does that however. I'd also prefer Casspi come back but Green is a decent pick up. I'm also glad to hear Acy as an option to be brought back. This team missed his yank down the rim power dunk ability last year.

Realistically:

1. Sign Rondo 2/20
2. Sign some other insignificant role player to a bloated contract

Call it a day.

Stretch Landry. Trade Thompson for Frye. Sign Rondo, re-sign Casspi, sign Acy & sign Alan Anderson.

Not real realist or financially possible.

Help me out. How is it not financially feasible? I'm not a pro on the cap. I assume we need to rid Landrys contract?

I'd say Nik and JT for Gibson is more realistic than prying Frye away from Orlando. A Frye JT swap is unrealistic. Magic would never bite on that. He played a nice role for them last year.

Also with all the talk of signing both Green and Rondo, how is that not realistic?

Well, rumors are the cap will be 2 million more than thought, so, lets say the Kings have 10 million pre-trade or stretch. If they can stretch Landry that bumps it up to around 4 million. If they decline the options on Stock and Moreland that's what, another 1.5 million? That puts them up to around 15 or so. You would hope that would be OK enough but that breaks down to only 7.5 per player. Those numbers seem fair but who knows what Green gets. I can't see it being smart to pay him any more than 10 considering he's a role player and he would be in McLemores role offensively. If the Kings are going after Green I think their best bet is to offer sign and trade package to the Spurs involving one of Ben or Nik and using the potential 5th year as leverage.

If you renounce RMac's rights, that would be an extra $947,276 -- total Kings' cap space = ~$17,050,225 but I doubt the Kings will renounce RMac, imo.

Yeah and I don't think its smart to renounce Moreland either. We will need depth to make any kind of run and Moreland is a cheap asset at the least and a cheap contributer at the best. So lets say its 15,257,830.

Amino just signed for 4yr 30m - 7.5m a yr. I would consider him a level 3 wing player and Middleton just signed 5yr 70 m - 14yr.

So Danny Green will probably ask for 12 -15m as a level 1 wing. Harris and Carroll should be in that range as well. Next level down would be Matthews, Afflao, Ellis, Shumpert and JR Smith for between 8-11m as a level 2.

If we sign Rondo, he is gonna want a one yr deal around 8m IMO. I think we get that done. It's not the way I would go but I think its a likely course and I can see it being a success. So if we use that money on Rondo that leaves around 7m.

I think that realistically prices us out of the level 2 guys unless one of them falls but they will most likely to be poached by a contending team with the same money issues as us. We would be smart to lock up a guy like Gerald Green for around 4-5mil. He fits what we need and at a price we can afford.

Say we can't move Thompson and Stauskas for what we'd like. With Green we could still look like a decent team. We could grab Acy for depth.

WCS - Moreland/Landry - Green/Acy - Stauskas - Collison/McCallum

We should also keep a eye on the summer league wings as a fringe roster guy like James Anderson, C.J. Leslie, Juylan Stone and DeAndre Liggins. All have played in the Nba and NBA Dleague. Spotlight on Liggins, who played with Cousins at Kentucky.

Waiving 3 non-guaranteeds, who all together make less than $2.65 million, adds just a bit more than $1 million to cap space due to salaries being replaced by minimum cap holds (around $523,000 each).
Sending all 3 in a pack allows Kings to take back $4 million salary. These guys have some, even if low, value around the league, so I'm sure teams around the league would facilitate S&T of their FA for these 3 guys, if they were about to lose that FA anyway.

I don't like to get into the specifics of playing GM (As in creating trade scenarios) but if we're the only team willing to take on Rajon Rondo how is he worth more than the MLE?

I agree, especially since teams with actual MLEs can't give him 1+1 contract.

He is worth what he can get. IF we are desperate enough to bid and negotiate vs no one then that is how he is worth more.

Sign Rondo, resign Casspi and trade Thompson/Landry + Stauskas for Kevin Martin.

A team that really likes the player they are after. Not saying that is us necessarily because other teams are involved and Rondo's skill level makes him worth more then the mid level to answer your original question and this one a different way but still truthfully.
