I like it.

Probably the same role Hinkie was offered.
Perry has an impressive resume. Has been a Head Coach in college and was a part of the front office for the Pistons championship run.

Looks like Vlade is solely GM now and Perry will be Executive VP of Basketball Ops. Both new hires we made recently seem like good moves.

Not sure how I feel about this one. I hope it's because Vlade doesn't know how to communicate with other GMs, which you get the feeling that's a large reason of the hire. Vlade's vision stays on track, just getting someone better to make it happen.

While I agree with you completely about the reason for the hire and that it's a good and necessary thing to get someone more plugged in, I HATE ALL of Orlando's recent moves(trades and drafts), so if he was the decision maker there it leaves me slightly shook.

That is the exact same reason why I'm not sure how I feel about it. I have that nervous feel.
I'm not enamored with his resume like others. Detroit under Dumars etc.

I think partly it's because he didn't want to. Once again, from what you can gather it seems like Vlade took on all that responsibility because he had to. Now he can hopefully focus on less and let his team do the in between work.

He presumably has a lot of relationships deep in the league, and not just with other front offices, but with agents and the league office. Not a flashy name, but I don't think that's what we need. We just need someone who knows their way around, and that's what Perry is.

Just keep him away from the scouting and deal making decisions. Steal his Rolodex and sit him in front of a phone in an office.

Don't know much about him, but from what I can see, his experience extends far beyond Orlando. If there is a track record that followed him to the Magic, then I have to agree with you. However, it doesn't seem like one did. All the language that is being used is that his value is in his connections and ability to navigate the NBA.
Given that Vlade was reticent to make ANY trade unless physically in the room with his trading partner, I'd think this removes that obstacle and makes it easier for us to make deals.
With the two new hires, one helps Vlade figure out who to go after and fits the goals of building the team, the other facilitates the acquisition of those players. Makes sense on paper.

My point exactly. We use him for his experience and connections in facilitating deals. Not for whatever player development, scouting or player evaluation he may have been involved with. If that wasn't his role in Orlando then great. Nothing to worry about.
Like you said we look to be doing all the right things to build a great command structure. Took some time and a few guys came and went but right now, on paper, all the guys in house make sense.

As a player or as part of a FO? Perry did with the Pistons in '04 I believe.
