Didn't see where we had a thread covering our new "GM Thingy + Dumars"

Press Conference

Wednesday 23d, 11:30 AM Pacific

https://www.nba.com/kings/monte-mcnair-introductory-press-conference-live-stream

Unless something comes up for me I'll take some notes on the conference.

Monte mentioned maintaining flexibility about 100 times.

Fortunately I think he understands this should be a rebuild

See thread here

https://community.kingsfans.com/threads/monte-mcnair-introductory-press-conference-weds-sept-23-11-30-am-pt.75254/

Introduced as GM, was alone at table to start things up.

Said thank you for opportunity to lead Kings basketball operations.

"Excited to work with coach Walton"

Then right to questions.

Ham...Asked about his vision he sold the front office, tear down, rebuild.

"Compete hard, build winning habits" "Be consistent, keep flexibility, compete for playoffs but have work to do" His job is to keep flexibility and be aggressive when the time comes

Associated press:

"What are biggest challenges because of covid etc and irregular season"

Mcnair said he is preparing for draft.

Cunningham:

"What sticks out at you with roster"

McNair, a lot of talent/versatility he and Walton seem to agree on playing hard and building winning habits.

Jason Jones:

"Tell us about prior relationship with Walton before coming here, how they'll work together"

McNair, he and Walton didn't know each other but have mutual friends. Luke's going to be our coach next year, aligned vision.

Sac Observer:

Basically we've stunk for 14 years, what are you going to do to change that?

Flexible and be ready

Anderson from Bee:

Asked about Fox's talents, what he sees

McNair bright future no detailed answer

Matt George KHTK:

Asked about Bagley, what McNair thinks

Excited to work with Luke to see him develop.

Ham again, "What does he want from a second in command"

McNair "Only as good as the people around you"

Cunningham: "What he sees in team that he likes and wants to do"

McNair "Fox's speed, ability for team to shoot the 3"

Amick : "How similar to Houston are you going to do things?" "Any new approaches"

McNair "Play fast, space the floor, roster is different than Houston and will dictate how to build team"

Sac Observer "Dumars, is chief something or other strategy guy thing, Will you consult him on trades/moves etc"

McNair "Joe is going to assist Vivek in all aspects in the organization, I was hired to be head of basketball ops so that's what I'm going to do" "Joe will be a great resource for me"

Sactown Royalty : "What is one area you want to focus on for team needs"

McNair "Consistent effort, winning habits

When we have opportunity to improve team we'll be ready to go full steam ahead.

Anderson: "What he sees on Buddy analytically"

McNair "Elite shooter, spacing"

Jones: "Asked about Bogi"

McNair "Big part of team"

Notice the be flexible and be ready to improve the team, that was very important.

Means, he will always be looking to wheel and deal, not gun shy, don't cripple the budget.

:D

- He is going let Walton coach the team next season.
- Spoke highly of Fox and Buddy.
- Wants to establish winning habits and wants to see effort from the guys on a nightly basis.

Sounds like he is open to make moves and will have complete control on this roster.

In general, a straight forward press conference. He had canned responses for the most part.

I think we'll be pretty aggressive in the trade market as Mcnair will want to put his imprint on the roster. I don't know how reliable the sources he has are, but the Legion Hoops guy reported that Philly was interested in Buddy. I know the obvious move is something built around Tobias and Richardson coming back but that doesn't seem to jive with Mcnair's repeated emphasis on flexibility. Harris being locked in at just about 40 million over the next four years is far from flexible.

Part of me hopes we go after Horford/Thybulle if Philly is willing to shed Horford's deal at the price of Thybulle. Horford helps in the building a winning culture department and Thybulle gives us a future all defense guard to pair with Fox.

Watched the press conference. Didn't seem like he said much, but I like his general outlook and disposition. I'm excited to see what he does with the draft.

I'm kinda excited. I know that i'll regret it, but I liked what he said.

I think we see Barnes shipped out this summer. Buddy fits with what he wants to do, and if he can teach Walton to use him right that could be fine. Resign Bogdan and move him to the starting 3.

I'm not sure we see a full tear down this year. Maybe something like Barnes for James Johnson + #17.

I know lots of Kings fans are sold on Haliburton. Could use #17 and #12 to move up and grab him.

Definitely. Encouraging to see us with an actual front office structure for the first time in what feels like forever. Really hoping this group can turn us around.

Morey fired? Time to get Dumars out of here and make Morey an adviser in that Jerry West role.

Morey is going to have his choice of what he will do next, so not sure thats a realistic option

You’re probably right. It would be awesome though. If he really likes McNair, then I could see a sliver of a chance that he wants a challenge and some money for a holdover year.

What I really want is Gary Payton as a Fox mentor.

Flexible and be ready

I know I am way late to the party on this, but with McNair repeatedly talking about flexibility, I think he is going to have to get rid of one of Bogi and Buddy. To have any cap flexibility at all, you just can't have two $20m SGs on the roster. And I think Barnes becomes more and more tradable as his salary gets smaller.

I think that if Buddy goes, it is going to be during the draft. If he is still on the team after that, I think that Bogi is a goner.

Well if he does want to keep Bogi long term, he could sign him and wait for better value on Buddy, even if it's the season after this.

But long term Barnes + one of them out seems sensible. Don't know if both of them + draft assets gets a star? Perhaps an overpaid or disgruntled star? Or taking worse loot for draft assets would be the way to go.

But no more middling vets please.
