Ok, so maybe not completely a lateral move, but it still makes much more sense to move KT with Artest rather than Bibby.

No, it's not even close to lateral. It doesn't matter that Kenny, Snow and Marshall all suck. Shaving a year off of Kenny's deal is absolutely huge for us.

In many cases sure, it might make more sense to package Ron with Kenny, but we're not getting a full expiring back regardless, so really, if we can move Kenny, we freaking do it.

I'd hardly call moving from Kenny Thomas to Eric Snow or Donyell Marshall huge. Positive movement, fair enough, but not in the same ballpark as huge. If the player that Sacramento got for Kenny had some real on court talent or was an actual expiring contract, that would be huge, getting Marshall or Snow in return is the absolute least they can do for the substandard return for the player they want (Artest/Bibby)

Gooden in return for Bibby isn't that impressive because he's not that much of an upgrade over what the Kings already have. Gooden, Moore & SAR would all be fighting for playing time next season leaving none of them happy. Gooden is a decent rebounder, but not great, an OK scorer, but not great. He's not much of a defender or shot blocker, he's almost redundent for pieces the Kings have already.

It's essentially like trading Kenny for an expiring next year, which is still huge because it saves us money when we need it to be saved. Looking into the future, moving Kenny for a shorter contract could very well mean the difference between having no real cap space in the 09 offseason (like $3-$4million which does nothing for us) and having $11-12million in cap space. So yes, it is huge.

Expirings at the end of this season might be huge, at the end of next season is only huge if you're main-lining the other team's Kool-Aid.

No because we won't be able to clear sufficient cap space at the end of this season anyway. We can only hope to get under the tax.

Both Bibby & Ron expire the season before KT.
Brad Miller, SAR & Mikki Moore expire the same season as KT's current contract.

Moving KT's contract up one year would be nice but cannot by a reasonable person be called "huge".

Return to Sacramento Kings
