If I showed you an effective picture that used the pencil filter you'd understand why I'm saying this. I'd show or post the link but It's a nude picture. Maybe I'll pixelate the nude areas and pm you the link?
Color in his skin and use the smudge tool and he won't look so pasty and white. Also blur the BG around him a little so that you get a better depth perception. There are other things I would pick on, but given where you are in the learning process I think I've given you enough to work on.
IMO it looks like you're at about step three of twenty five on this picture. If I'm being too criticle let me know.

But he IS so pasty white! (couldn't resist).
I like the effort, but IMHO the total image just comes off as busy and cluttered. Also the text is way too subdued. Maybe consider not cropping so tight onto him. It's a good start and certainly something to work with.
Just my 2 cents FWIW.

You can send me the pictuyre, thats cool, Im still pretty new at this. Havent done much in a while.
I am using paint.net, so it is very difficult cutting out the players or whatever the focus of the picture would be. It never looks good when I try to sperate the player and bg.
No, your not being to criticle, Im open to anything. Its the way I'll only be able to learn. Just keep in mind Im not using Photoshop.
If you do know how to use paint.net let me know of any pointers you mite have. Thanks

You don't have to cut anything to blur the background. Just use the pen tool and make a selection around the player. Then invert the selection. Use your blur. If you're not good with the pen tool then feather your selection. That way they blur fades into the picture. If you get the feathering down it's hard to tell you didn't cut him out.
Also use BIG pictures. You can get more detail and shrink them down.

If you want a real challenge, you should try working with this image. I might play around with it over the weekend if I can keep myself from being too lazy.
The cool thing is that I actually know the AP photographer who shot it.

Here's another I plan on making a sig out of if I ever get the itch. It's of him in college but the color scheme isn't different on the jersey.

He may be day to day for the next game or 2. It is a mid-foot strain and probably isn't too serious.
