OT: Hawks fan - ? about Bibby and "Team Dime"

I had never heard the phrase "Team Dime" until a Sacramento poster brought up the term on our Atlanta Hawks website. Since then it's come up a few times.
Could someone w/no particular ax to grind against Bibby please explain WTF this "Team Dime" is all about?
I naturally gravitate towards the opinion that a 30 year old man w/children hanging out with an entourage is... well.... lame. Perhaps I am not aware of the entire story behind it.
Could you guys share some background/opinions on this "Team Dime" thing?
For instance does Bibby bring 10 people into the locker room before/after home games to just sit around?
Here is the discussion that we had on our Hawks board. Please add a little insight!

So they're a group of free loaders that Bibby keeps at his beckon call?
There has to be something more to this.

This is part of the "notorious" history of "Team Dime":
September 2005: Star Kings guard Mike Bibby and some friends - known to themselves as Bibby's "Team Dime" - are involved in two midtown bar fights, including one at a 28th and J street saloon that left a man with a hairline fracture of his jaw and numerous cuts and bruises. Three months later the Sacramento County District Attorney's office cleared Bibby and members of his entourage.
As has been said, "Team Dime" is basically a group of friends and family that hang with Bibby. Nothing all that unusually, many pro athletes and other clebs have their "entourage" and "cling-ons". If it weren't for a couple of incidents like the one noted above, nobody would really care. My personal feelings about "Team Dime" is: who cares.

I really could care less about Mike Bibby - now that he is no longer here - and I never had any real axe to grind anyway - he did good things for us when he fit the team we used to have, and his effective time here had passed and it was time for both parties to move on.
That said, I have always loathed his "Team Dime". This is - as previously stated - a large group of his relatives and hangers-on that uses his celebrity to get freebie and star treatment for themselves all around town on his name. The name comes from his jersey number here (#10) that has been his for his entire playing career. Despite his fairly quiet demeanor (he is NOT a team leader despite what many people say), he has a HUGE ego and keeps these toadies around to stroke it constantly for him. He is a bit old for this garbage - needless to say - and also the notion that he is married is (I believe) mistaken. He has four children with his long-time girlfriend but has never actually married her.
Obviously these things are a personal choice, but the behaviors speak volumes about Mike's personal maturity level if you ask me.

That is the angle I'm interested in. This Team Dime thing is like a "WTF???" thing to me.
It doesn't pass the sniff test.

I'm pretty sure you're right, he's not married.

My cousin sort of knew Bibby and she met a lot of his team dime friends although she didn't hang out with either of them much(she's only 19 and they're all 25+) but they're not really bad people. They're just Mike's buddies that have hung out with him since college and they hang out at his house a lot and stuff. It didn't effect him on the court or get in the way of his teammates relationships with him or anything though. I really doubt it'll be a problem.

A lot of those tats are old from when he was in college/younger. He didn't just get them. People do stupid crap when they're in their early 20s. I don't see why you guys care that much? Not too many people in Sac ever did

Basically...
Like one guy is dish bitch, the other laundry bitch, the other one drives his daughters to school and makes lunch... and so on...

"doesn't pass the sniff test"
lol
your a dork man
whats hard to understand, the guy is rich and he looks out for his close friends and family and in turn they help him out.
oh no wait a minute he's 30 now, he needs to abandon all of his friends and family and be a geek that stays home by himself if he's not playing basketball. come on, either your a sheltered dork or your from a foreign country, whats "WTF??" about it? the guy is rich and keeps a tight inner circle of friends and relatives that have his back.
No need to call people "dorks"...the rules of this site have not changed and bashing people like that still is not allowed...KIE

That would all be great if it were completely true.
The problem - going back to Bmiller52's first post - is that I also have some friends who have been at some of the venues where "Team Dime" caused a LOT of trouble (including the broken jaw incident) and often Bibby was NOT EVEN THERE WITH THEM!
If your "friends and family" are really there for you, they do not act like a bunch of gangsta/punk/thug fools, but rather show respect and gratitude for what you have and are doing for them. I know that this opinion will not be popular - especially with the young men here who still haven't grown out of the idea that you gotta have your homies' back no matter what.
But the reality of life is that if you are truly trying to better things for yourself and your family, then you Grow up and learn that part of having had success in society is acting the part and gaining a certain amount of maturity as you age. Bibby with his "Team Dime" and it's almost gang mentality does NOT exhibit this. And it is because of this that I have no respect for the man personally - even though I think that he is a very good basketball player.

Wait what? What exactly are you saying? That it's normal for a 30 year old with children to raise to have a bunch of dudes swarming all over the place?

???
i was responding to a quote that said once you mature your not supposed to have your homies back no matter what. what the hell is the point of even having a friend if that person DOESN'T have your back no matter what.
anyway, i don't know the situation but you guys make it sound like once you have kids and turn 30 your social life ends and you can't hang out with your friends. bibby ain't a dead beat dad that smokes blunts and drink 40s at his potnas house all day while his kids are running around doing who knows what. this is an incredibly wealthy professional basketball player that is able to support a select inner circle of close friends and family who then help with his day to day activities while giving him trusted people to hang out with and have fun with. whats the big deal? he's 30 with kids, he can't kick it with his friends and enjoy himself too?

First off, as you grow up you are supposed to gain enough maturity so that you are not irresponsible enough to put yourself in situations where you need your "homeboys to have your back". Second, if you need to have your "homeboys to have your back", it's obvious that you are not taking responsibility for your actions. Finally, what does all of this say about his "homies"? They're either a group of leaches living off of Bibby or they're just a group of thugs that Bibby thinks he needs to have around to look tough.

I'd bet his "homies" bail when the money dries!
