Moving to Sacramento!

I know this site is about basketball but didnt know were else to ask these questions but on the realgm board. Me and two friends are moving to Sacto this July. Dont ask me why but we have decided to move there. I was just wondering a few things. First off we are looking to rent a house and have been looking on craigslist and havent really had a problem finding housing. I am sum what concerned with the job market out there. Oh by the way I live in New Hampshire. How is the pay in Sacto? Also I do not have a license and am wondering how the pub trans is? Any help with these questions would really be appreciated. Also any areas we should and SHOULDN'T look into living.

But really, I don't know exactly where you are moving to in Sacramento (Elk Grove, Downtown Sac, etc) so I can't really comment on the public transportation..and I've never been to HM so I can't really say how it compares to that either.

Min wage is 8 dollars an hour in Sacramento, though.

Depends what you like to do, but there are good areas and bad areas of Sacramento, like any town...although Sacramento has been rising quite a bit with gangs. Roseville is about 15 miles away from Sacramento is a good, up and coming town IMO.

The public transportation isn't great, but in the right situation, I'm sure you could make it work. As for jobs, it kind of depends on how qualified you are, or so would think.

Depends on your definition. I'm not sure what summers are like in NH, but it's usually in the triple digits in Sac. Although in comparison to a place like New York, for instance, it's at least not so humid.

Sacramento is nothing like New Hampshire. Our grass isn't green, it's hotter than hell (it's a dry heat at least), and compared to NH, there's a lot of people here. If you've never been to this side of the country, it might take some getting used to, but it's an ok place to live once you're used to it. I don't know what kind of jobs you're looking for, so I can't really tell you how good the outlook is, but God help you if you're in real estate.

Most of the really good neighborhoods are on the outskirts of town, like Elk Grove, and they're expensive. Decent ones inside the city are Land Park and Greenhaven. The neighborhoods I would stay out of are Oak Park, Meadowview, Mack, and Del Paso Heights.

Public transport is okay. You can get to where you want, but it might take a while. Everyone here on the west coast has a car, so you might want to think about getting your license and a car sooner or later.

as has been said avoid at all cost the majority of south sacramento. elk grove is ok but its real suburban, your screwed if you don't have a car. downtown/mid town area might work the best if you don't drive. and its kind of cool down there, but again be careful.

other wise everything is REAL spread out out here. the city was horribly planned, just a bunch of random suburbs all over the place connected by freeways. other than downtown if your dependent on public transportation then look for a place near the light rail, that will get you around ok.

shipping and receiving? they got fed ex and ups out in west sac.

so anyway stay out of south sac, meadowview, g parkway, actually anything between mack and damn downtown i guess haha, north highlands is bad, the heights is ugly, natomas is nice though. uh it sort of depends, theres places like rancho cordova where i live now that has some pretty nice affordable areas but at the same time has some neighborhoods and apartment complexes where you will get shot and robbed, so a lot of it is the actual block or street not necesarily the general area, unless your talking south sac, again it is the last area in sac i'd recommend someone new going to.

Please...

Light rail is sort of like the subway. It's above ground for starters. Another thing it's not like NY where you are dumb to drive around. In Sacramento your car gets you social status. So if you're rollin' RT (public trans) you better stick to Midtown! It's the only place where you can find a cab you don't have to call for and the only place where public trans is more accepted and accessible. Midtown is the place to be anyway. Also don't sleep on West Sacramento along the river. I don't know how much it costs there but they are trying to rebuild that area.

One thing I know about people in Sacramento is they aren't as friendly as in other places in the country. There are a lot of pretentious people here.

As far as jobs...I work for an energy company and don't plan on finding another company to work for so I'm not in tune with job market. I do know construction has been a little slow because of the housing market. IMO if you work construction & landscaping, can't get a DL, and are moving across country you did something.

Anyhow if you're looking to move with a roommate or two you can get a place for $800 fairly easily. I'd just stick to Midtown because you can walk for a lot of stuff, and there's a lot to do there as far as nightlife.

I would reccomend midtown. If you get a job downtown you could walk or bike to work, as well as light rail and bus services nearby. It is also the coolest neighborhood in Sacramento.

Yeah West Sac is still developing, but it's not bad. My friends brother lives there and the only problem I noticed was that he happened to live really close to train tracks, so it wasn't entirely quiet. But it's not a bad little area, and I wouldn't think it would be too expensive.

eh its not really that theres tons of bad areas, its that you'll find bad streets, or blocks or apartment complexes, then a quarter mile a while you'll have a nice quiet neighborhood. you can say an area like rancho is "ghetto", but the street i live on is incredibly quiet and low key. sure you drive up the way and around the corner and its pretty hoodish. my point being watch out more for the actual apartment complex or street you move on more so then the whole area.

I don't know, you don't reallly need a car in Sac, really depends on where you live. It is a perk though. I live in East Sac, its right next to midtown, i know a lot of people in those areas who don't drive at all its becoming a trend where i live
and they get around fine.

I would say move to midtown though. Bars all round if your 21, lots of women about. Theres a mall. Loud so you can party if you like to party
