Do you guys think that reggie intends to continue to run the offense through Miller and latter through Hawes? or, do you guys think that he will look to go a more traditional route and find a PG that we can run the offense through?

I feel like we've been running the offense through Miller out of necessity because we had such a great score first PG in Bibby. But if we trade for one or draft a pass first PG will we be seeing Miller and Hawes spending more time off ball and fighting for positon in the post to get our post offense set up.

If we have a PG that runs our offense I think that we will get great results using Hawes in the Post but if we are still trying to run the offense through our C's shouldn't we look to find another Shoot first PG.

What do you guys think Theus wants to do? I'm Honestly not sure what type of offense he perfers.

I can't read his mind, but ideally I'd like to find a lightining quick PG to team with Martin to create the fastest/quickest backcourt in the league. Go to a more up-tempo style and beat teams with our quickness. I think that's our strength.

I think we should mix it up and utilize all of our options offensively. We dont have that one true superstar so our offense will have to be run through committee.

To be Honest I'm not thrilled with the Idea of us always running our plays through Miller and I don't want to use Hawes in that way at all. He has good passing skills but I would perfer that he spends his time in the low post where we can really take advantage of his skills.

Smills I agree that I would really like the Kings to have a fast pass first PG and I'm torn between wanting to get Ford, or Drafting Augustine, or going with Westbrook who I think is much more of a PG than most give him credit for. I think these are the type of PG's that we need to take advantage of how fast Garcia and Martin are.

I think that's more the root of his question, which players to target and for what kind of system?

For the longer-term, I think we should definitely look to be a diverse offensive team, being able to play in the half-court consistently, and also be able to get easy baskets in transition. I think Hawes/Kevin/PG/a skilled SF combined with others and additions will favor to that.

For the short-term, I don't know, but possibly Artest/Salmons, Miller, Kevin, more Hawes eventually, will be involved in it. And probably who we draft this year, in the near future.

We could try running our offense through Spencer in the post. It worked for SA with Duncan.

I think Speights could fill that bill as well and he's quite a bit better rebounder to boot.

Too bad he's significantly worse defensively and Arthur has more moves on offense. Also a better jump shot.

I think he really wants to run, as evidenced at the end of the season when he had frontline of Shelden Williams/Spencer Hawes playing run and gun! Haha. It caused us to get some pretty big butt kickings at times too IIRC.

Now the question is whether Geoff Petrie supplies him with the tools to play that way. I don't think that style suits most of the players we have on the team with the exception of John Salmons and few others. That's why I thought a player like Al Thornton or Julian Wright may have been better picks for that style of play. With that said it's clear there is something worth building on with Martin and Hawes and the ability for both to play off of eachother one day. I think think a motion offense is the way to go. Speights could fit that style very well, he is a very underrated passer and smart ball player.

I would still like to see us draft a player like Anthony Randolph or Donte Greene, that would allow Theus to go small at times and give us more weapons when doing so. Arthur may be a better fit for an up tempo team as well. If you want to play up tempo ball Arthur is the better choice than Speights, individually I think Speights has the upper hand between the two.

It'll be a bit of the traditional offense where the PG does the playmaking, and a bit of where our big men (Hawes mostly I suppose) will be directing the offense, depending on the situation and match-ups. We have guys that can score many different ways, and having an adjustable offensive scheme will allow us to take advantage of that.

I think it would be great to be a very well rounded team and that should be part of our goal but eventually we have to decide if the offense is going to be run by a PG or if it's going to be a committe of ball handlers.

The difference being
Kings back in the Hey day with Webber Vlade Peja Christie and Bibby
this was an overall good passing team with two great passers in the post but bibby wasn't expected to generate the team offense he just added to what was there.
or
The Hornets now or the Suns
Both teams run by the PG who controls most offensive sets and controls the tempo of the game.

It's just the difference of figuring out who the primary ball handler will be.

I would perfer to go with a PG generated attack but have great passers in the post if possible kind of a hybrid of the types of systems.

The Speights/Arthur argument is a toughie... at this point I'll take Arthur and the defense.

Not relating to what SKZZZ has said (at least I don't think and hope not from what was posted), but, I don't think Theus wants to go for a team, in the way of which relies on running and quick offense to win games. You can only be so successful like that in this league. And to improve, significant changes are required.

Usually with that kind of team, you're not going to be solid defensively, rather being inconsistent, and only so effective when you actually do play defense. And on offense, because of the reliance on that nature of offense, you're a limited offensive team in ways to score. With what you do well as your basis for winning games, parts of your game will be limited/taken away/contained by the defense honing in on them.

With that type of team identity, the make-up of your focus, energy, and personnel isn't condusive to being well-rounded.

Basically, with that style, you're going to put yourself at an immediate disadvantage at some point in the playoffs (maybe even in the 1st round depending at what standard of team you are). Thus guaranteed elimination every single time.

You need to be a relatively balanced team, which consists of half-court execution on both ends, and at least be an adequate team in transition.

That's the kind of direction we should go, I expect us to go, and I think is how we have to go.

Having to play well offensively in general to win, having a significant disparity of one end of the floor (usually it's offense over defense) - just doesn't work.

Being balanced and flexible offensively, gives you the best chance to win and get better.

Of course this is in relation to the extended sense of the team.

Well, if we are talking about, dream theoretical team then...
(I'll modify to fit in K. Mart and S. Hawes, the only two King's I see as long term starters) - also the type of current players I see resembling the roles

PG: Jose Calderon
Its easy to say Nash or Paul, but those are somewhat unrealistic. A true floor general, can lead the offense. Must be able to score himself if needed.
SG: Prime Kevin Martin
Good scorer, good at penetrating, can play pg if necessary for small stretches of time. Good outside shooter, capable of taking big shot if needed. Good at drawing fouls, not liability at defense.
SF: Ron Artest/Bruce Bowen/Doug Christie
Great defender. Will take on the opposition 2/3 each game. Will be able to guard the kobe's, lebrons, wades, etc. Job is defense and make shots if open.
PF: 6'10 stronger version of David West
Good defender, doesn't have to be great. Good rebounder and shot blocker. Can play both PF and C, PF in half court game, C in fast break game.
C : A Center Version of Pau Gasol (Something Hawes can become w/ work)
Not a defensive liability, Solid scorer, lowpost, good passer, big, good for half court basketball

Bench
Two 3 point specialists
1 Energy guy who can score. (B. Jackson type player, currently Garcia)
1 Shotblocking big (Keon Clark)
1 Good defender big (Scot Pollard/Jeff Foster)
1 Scoring big bench player
1 backup PG, who can step up and be starting


Currently of a team of 12, I currently see us having 4 pieces, possibly 5.
Kevin Martin as Starting SG
Spencer Hawes as Starting C

F. Garcia as bench scorer, leader of bench
B. Udrih as backup PG who can step it up

Possibly
S. Williams as Defending Big

Needs
Starting PG
Starting SF
Starting C
Scoring Big (Bench)
3 Point Specialists (Bench)

Of those 5 roles, both scoring big and 3 point specialists are easy to come by via FA. (Shareef, Joe Smith, Robert Horry, Brent Barry, Jason Kapono type players)

Ideally,
PG is acquired via trade (Artest/Miller/Salmons/Moore)
SF is acquired via Free Agency
PF is acquired via Draft

In terms of scoring, team should be
PF>SG>C>PG>SF
for starters, defense in
SF>PF>PG>C>SG



Salmons + Moore + #44 for TJ Ford
And lets hope one of Arthur/Speights/McGee/Jordan/Love can turn out and become a David West
