Martin at the 3, Garcia at the 2

Post#1 » by ICMTM » Sat Jun 7, 2008 12:44 am

IMO would solve a lot of issues! Defensively Garcia plays well enough to guard either position, and Offensively Garia handles the rock a lot better a-la Doug Christie. Martin is a better rebounder than Garcia.

Thoughts?

Why not just play them on the wings. The 2 and 3 is pretty semantical in terms of on the court play. The only difference is how or where they run offensively. You can match up however you want to defensively and it doesn't really matter in terms of position. Garcia and Martin are both wing players. Martin at the 2/3 and Garcia at the 2/3 is pretty much the same. I'd call that interchangeable parts.

Why not just keep it how it is? Play Martin at the 2 and either Artest or Salmons at the 3, trade the other one for a pg or pf and then draft either a pg or pf. Then our problems would be solved. I like seeing Garcia come off the bench as that Bobby type spark plug. I think Petrie was hoping Douby would be that player, but I am not confident in Douby.

Pretty much. The only time it really matters what position you play is the position you have to defend. Martin can't gaurd 3's. Garcia can. I think that automatically makes Garcia the 3 on most nights.

What difference does it make at all? If were playing the Lakers, for example, Garcia will be guarding Kobe and Martin will be guarding Radmonovic, and Kobe will guard Martin while Radmonovic checks Garcia. Regardless of who you call "shooting guard" and who you call "small forward"

That is the reality check right there.

No matter what YOU want to do, the other team is going to match their best defender against your best offensive player so what you CALL a player is a moot point.

The reality is that we have a real height problem at the 3. All we have (yes, I include Ron here because he came in the league as a "2") are swing players that are either 2/3 or 1/2/3. What a contending team usually has nowadays is a starting thre who is 6'9" or taller (a la Prince/Lewis/Peja, etc.) or a superathletic guy who is 6'7" or taller. Garcia AND Salmons are best suited to backing-up at the three or playing a point-forward (Scottie Pippen type) role in a three big offense (i.e. - center and PF plus Ron/Kevin/(Cisco/Salmons)). Therefore you create a SIZE mismatch for the defending team. Kevin, although still a bit light, is a big 2 at 6'7" and creates his own matchup issues for smaller two's (about half the starters in the L) that you do not want to change.

i honestly want to see Spencer running as a high post C (his range is incredible) and get either another true C or a really bulky/athletic PF to run next to him to offset his youth and lack of leaping ability.

I meant as opposed to Artest and Martin. I'm a firm believer that championship teams have star point guards and bigs.

He's going to be utilized down low significantly, too, though.

Of course, because you cannot teach his ambidextrous post game and the great footwork he displays. As he gets older and bulks up, he will be moved down low more often. That should not be at the complete expense of his outside ability AND his ability to create by seeing over the top of guys a la Vlade.

Actually there was more than a couple times this season when Theus actually put Beno on the other teams SF if it was a bigger player. Martin usually slides down to gaurd the PG. One of the advantages of having a bigger than average PG I guess.

Are you suggesting we trade Ron then? If so for whom?

I was lookng for a more concrete answer. Theoretically I agree with you, but pragmatically what's actually out there?
