Moves Around The League

Post#1 » by RIPskaterdude » Wed Jul 9, 2008 7:53 pm

Not sure if we had a thread like this, I remember we used to a while ago. Any idea what happened to it? Anyways, go ahead and merge it or keep this one, but I thought it would be a good idea to talk about the free agent signings/trades that other teams are making. As of today (7/9)...

New Orleans signs Chris Paul to a contract extension.

New York signs Chris Duhon.

Minnesota obtains Rodney Carney, Calvin Booth, a first-round pick and cash considerations from Philadelphia in exchange for a future conditional second-round draft pick.

Miami signs James Jones (5 years/20 million?).

Portland obtains Ike Diogu and the rights to Jerryd Bayless from Indiana in exchange for Jarrett Jack, Josh McRoberts, the rights to Brandon Rush and cash considerations.

Indiana obtains T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, Maceo Baston and the rights to Roy Hibbert from Toronto in exchange for Jermaine O’Neal and the rights to Nathan Jawai.

Toronto re-signs Jose Calderon.

Dallas re-signs Jose Juan Barea and signs DeSagana Diop.

Sacramento re-signs Beno Udrih.

Memphis signs Marc Gasol.

Also "rumored" today is Elton Brand to the 76ers for 5 years/80 million, Corey Maggette to the Warriors for 5 years/50 million and Ronnie Turiaf to the Warriors for 4 years/17 million (if the Lakers don't match in 7 days).

All I can say is, WOW, Warriors are EXTREMELY overpaying for those two.

Good, I was going to start this thread, but looks your one step ahead :D

However, I'm extremely interested in what happens to Josh Smith, because I think it could ultimately affect us. I'm hoping/praying that Atlanta matches whatever Josh Smith is offered and that he returns to Atlanta. It's made extremely clear that Atlanta owners are dirt cheap, and aren't willing to spend any money at all.

How it pertains to us, I think that if we aren't able to land a top name FA in 2010, then DON'T USE THE GOD DAMM MONEY!!!!! GSW is pretty much screwing themselves over, as both Maggette and Turiaf are no where near the money they are reportedly being offered. But, if we have max level money in 2011, we could make a serious play at Al Horford, who I think is the IDEAL PF for our team and next to Hawes.

 at the Warriors for seriously overpaying Maggette and overpaying Turiaf. They are just really desperate to make a move right now, even if it isn't going to benefit them.

As for Brand, I thought he was one of the most classy players in the NBA. After picking the Sixers, he lost a lot of my respect. After the Clippers finally made a serious move to surround him with players that would enable them to contend, he ditches them.

LOL at how Brand duped the Clippers.

LOL at the Clippers signing Davis for that amount of money for 5 years. I give Davis 2 years before he starts missing 30-50 games because of injuries.

LOL at Davis thinking he was going to be playing with Brand, now he is on a team that probably wont make the playoffs unless they make a move for someone else.

LOL at the Warriors just trying to sign people just for the sake of signing people because they have already lost Davis and Pietrus. And they end up with Turiaf and Maggs, lol. It is going to be fun beating the Warriors this year.

Kudos to the 76ers for being creative and doing whatever needed to be done in order to steal Brand away.

I think any shot of us landing Thornton for Artest is gone, probably never would of happened anyways.

LOL at the Wizards for setting their team in mediocrisy for the next 5 years. Sorry but Butler, Arenas, and Jamison will get you to the playoffs but that's it. I don't see how they will have any good picks and or money to add to that trio.

LOL at the Kings for letting Ron know he is not in our long term plans. And for signing Beno for 5 years, just kidding, I actually think Beno is worth about that much.

I think the amounts these other teams are paying shows that GP & the Kings might know a thing or two. K Mart, Salmons, Beno and even Moore seem like nice contracts compared to those.

I still can't believe the Warriors would give Baron 65 million over 5 years. Then they give Maggette 50 million.

I do however think Maggette is worth 10 million a year, or at least close to that.

The Warriors are coming out weaker after this offseason. The Clippers may actually be better IMO (mainly because they didn't play with Brand last season so technically they should be better. Brand leaving them hurts for sure though). Especially if they can sign Josh Smith. I think a team with Baron, Gordon, Thornton, Josh Smith, and Kaman will surprise a lot of people. Nelly should quit the Warriors and take over that team! Man, that would be a fun team to watch.

Wasn't there a story on wiretap that they will pay Ellis at a starting price of $11 Million per year. That's kinda overpaying. If they DO sign him., they overpaid 3 players in a row.

Wow...Nugs dump Camby to the Clips for a 2nd round pick.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

Did anyone see this Camby salary dump coming?
What does this mean for Denver?

Camby expires in 2010. The Clippers have Mobley and Thomas that expire then also and will likely have money for the 2010 FA's.

This deal makes no sense to me for denver. They are a legit playoff team if they played any defense and they trade away their best defensive player. I know it clears cap space but Iverson is getting older and who knows where melo will end up in 2010. They should compete now.

We didn't have the capspace to absorb his salary. Neither did pretty much anyone else.

I'm starting to wonder if clearing capspace either next year or in 2011 might not be a better option with all the teams manuvering to open up 2010 there won't be anyone left after the primo markets get done and we would end up having to WAYYY overpay for mid-level free agents.

2011 is a lot better.

I've been fighting for 11 for quite some time, and I think others like Smills likes 11 better too.

Again, I'm going to point to the Hawks.

Cheap Ownership, horrible management, bad team. I can see a few things happening.
a) Josh Smith leaves, which will ultimately mean they won't make the playoffs this year and most likely won't next year either. That being the case, Johnson will most likely leave, since he'll get paid wherever he goes, and actually gets to win again. Meaning, Horford will be alone on that team, likely to leave as well.
b) Josh Smith stays, but takes up a large part of their cap. Atlanta resigns their players, but again, ownership is extremely cheap. If we are under the cap, and offer Horford the max frontloaded contract with an option at the end (AMAZING deal for him), contract around the 17-18 million starting range (whatever the maximum is), Atlanta will be forced to go past the lux threshold, something I highly doubt their ownership will do.

Having cap space in a year where everyone has cap space = trouble
Having cap space in a year few have cap space = possibilities.

Also, Question.
Say we make no moves effecting cap space, and say we are 30 total salary of 30 million going into the offseason of 2010. Lets also say that we don't get any major FA we want (Bosh, LeBron, Wade, etc.) and will require 15 million to be at the minimum salary level. Would it be possible to sign a few free agents to 1 year deals?
