As the days pressed on, Quincy Douby knew it was becoming unlikely the Kings would pick up his option. Shelden Williams said he felt the same.

On Monday, the picture became a little more clear.

Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie said the team options for both players are "somewhat under consideration, but highly unlikely."

The deadline is Oct. 31.

Yeah, at the very least, they'll have to earn their spots there. Otherwise, the cap space we will get would be too valuable. I mean that'll be another 8.8million for us in '10.

Edit: I will say though that it's kind of out of character for Geoff to be so direct like that. Usually he would just say something like "we're looking at some possibilities for some things."

Well, they wouldn't have effected the '10 plan had their options been picked up anyway. What it does however is give us more expiring $$$ for next year. Trade Brad and maybe John for expiring money and we have mucho cap space next year.

Perhaps, we might be going after Bynum?

I know he's a Laker, but suppose he turns out at least 1/10th as good as Laker fan's claim him to be (meaning, only the 10th best center of all time)

Total
~$27 mill (assume Garcia starts at $5.5 mil)

Also lets assume we get the 1st and 18th pick (Sac/Hou) (Assuming this high since its more money)
And for an 8 players under contract, we are looking at roughly 33.5 mil.

Now,
Brad Miller, Kenny Thomas, John Salmons, Mikki Moore add up to around 32.47 mil.

Miller, Salmons, and Moore we should be able to easily get rid of for expirings (if that's the direction we want to go)

Now, lets assume we can't trade away Kenny Thomas, and are forced to keep him, our total salary for a 9 man roster is around 42 million.

That should be enough to offer any player (such as Bynum) a max level contract.

I understand the mindset behind Sheldon's salary, he was a 5th pick, pick probabely 20 spots too high.
Douby was thrown into impossible situation to begin with, he was not a playmaker in college and there was no place for perimeter scorer on this team, he's a good player and it's sad to see him go.

Just because there options weren't picked up doesn't mean that they're out of the Kings picture long-term. What it means is they don't want to commit future salary to them NOW, and allow them to let the market assess and dictate their worth. If they feel it's a worthy investment, then they'll simply match the offer of the tendered offer. If not, they'll let them go. IMO I think both Douby and Shelden could be long-term fixtures in Sacramento.

Breaks my heart! Douby's been pretty much worthless and Shelden... just whatever.

I think it spells the beginning of the end as well.

Douby has perpetually had the "deer in the headlights" look ever since he got to Sacramento and lacks the ball handling skills necessary to fill the role he needs to fill. He is a shooter...that's basically all he has to offer. Unfortunately (for him) that skill set is redundant with others on the team. He is a highly-expendable role player.

While Shelden didn't have much of an opportunity last year to show what he could offer, he had opportunities this summer and during training camp/preseason. He has been OK...but he really hasn't demonstrated that he's really a long-term key piece. If he can pick it up this season I can see a potential to try to work a small contract with him. But there are better options.

I don't think I would say Quincy is just a shooter. Scorer would probably be more accurate as he has proven quite capable of getting to the basket, e. He also shown flashes of potential as a defender. But still, I agree that his skills are basically redundant here and that he isn't relevant to us until he develops some semblance of PG abilities, which he has yet to do.

And yeah, I think Shelden should get a nice opportunity here still before we make any decisions. But the fact of the matter is that he if doesn't prove to be worth 5.7mil by the end of the year, we probably shouldn't pick up the option.

No it's not a forgone conclusion but when your PRESEASON minutes are eaten away by the likes of Mikki Moore and Kenny Thomas when you are supposedly a "rebuilding" team it isn't the most glowing of endorsements.

Douby & Sheldon are both average at best for nba standars we are served best not to keep them in our long term plans these guys will serve us best in a trade packaged at some point with guys like b.miller,k9 or even m.moore if we are looking doubtful for the playoffs at some point !

douby has to compete withh guys like : beno,b.brown,salmons,k.martin,garcia,d.green etc. not much playing time there
& as for sheldon he's behind guys like : hawes,j.thompson (we will develope these guys 1st ) also behind vets like miller & moore so he wont see many minutes either

i see us dealing these 2 with guys like i mentioned above

Kings need a guy like Sheldon because he can provide muscle on the inside that none of our other bigs can. He's the strongest low post defender we have. He can lean against other BIGS like Oden, Bynum, Shaq, Howard etc... The KINGS need someone big enough and strong enough to go against guys like this and defend them in the post. Sheldon is a Scott Pollard type of player. He'll never be a starter but he's good to have on the bench. Until the KINGS can find another BIG who is a strong low post defender that can't be pushed around we need him.

As for Douby.. Now that we have Greene he's a little more expendable. I like Douby and he's shown some flashes of his potential but he's just been so inconsistent. I think he can develop into a Jason Terry type of player if he works hard enough. The guy can create his own shot and shoot the long ball. He just needs to relax and let the game come to him and not rush things so much. Hopefully, by not picking up his option he will have a chip on his shoulder and he will have a break through year. With Garcia out for awhile he'll get his chance.

I think Kings are gonna keep Shelden (stop spelling his name Sheldon) but just for cheaper.. I always like him, and reminds me a lot of Kwame Brown, who is a good bench player.
