It’s official. Kevin Johnson will be the first African-American mayor in Sacramento history. Not to mention the first ex-NBA player to hold the state’s mayoral seat.

Johnson, a 12-year NBA veteran who played for the Phoenix Suns from 1988 to 2000, claimed victory over incumbent Heather Fargo at roughly 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday night (as reported by the Sacramento Bee). At that time Johnson held a 57%-42% lead with over 80% of the votes counted.

Nobody will talk about this in the wake of this guy named Obama, but I think it is worth mentioning. Also nice to know that if Udrih or Jackson go down, you could ask your mayor to help to run the point for a couple of games... :D

WOW...Just heard about this on the news up here in Seattle! Very cool!

Got to admit that I had been so fixated on presidential, WA Gov and WA-8th CD races that I lost sight of this. I think Sacramento needed a change of leadership. Good to see KJ will get a shot.

What I posted on the General Board.

Huh...I don't remember that even being on my absentee ballot.

Well anyway, this should be interesting. In many respects, he impressed the hell out of me when I saw him debate Fargo. Some of his ideas just seemed to walk the border between brilliant and overly idealistic.

He can't be any worse than Heather Fargo, that's for sure. Like mitch said, some of his ideas seem a little idealistic, but I think the city needs someone like that right now. A lot of Sacramento politicians still think of Sacramento as an itty bitty cow town and that train of thought doesn't work anymore. His tough stance on crime is primarily why I voted for him, as crime has gone up quite a bit during Fargo's tenure.

Not thrilled about KJ because I do not want a Mayor who seems to be getting investigated wherever he goes. I am not one who believes in coincedences if they keep popping up. Seems crooked to me, but was Wolfay said he cant be any worse than Fargo. I do not want another Marion Barry situation where out Mayor is caught on camera doing something that will bring a great deal of shame on our city. My thoughts on his "alleged" forrays with the girls at his business' can be summer up by Katt Williams:

If someone calls you a crackhead for 20 years, Bi**h you smokin crack!

If you get investigated for the same thing 3 times in 2 states then you are doing something you should not be doing.

Go Kings =)

My company held a fundraiser for him and I got to talk with him for a good while...he was a really good dude. Very gracious and polite (because he has to be) but also seemed to get a real kick out of talking with the "lay-people", which needs to be taken with a grain of salt. But nonetheless, he didn't turn on the charm, and then turn it off when no one was around. And that to me is a great attribute. I was there with him after most had left and he was the same guy.

the reason i am excited for KJ is because there have been rumors that he is going to push for an arena in the railroad yard which would be AMAZING!
