Kings to Hire Martin's Agent as Assistant GM

Kings expected to hire agent Levien as assistant GM

The Kings could add a piece to their front office next month, when attorney and agent Jason Levien is expected to be named assistant general manager.

The move, which sources within the organization and close to the team say should be official in the coming weeks, marks a rare addition to the Kings' management team that Geoff Petrie has headed for 15 years. And with an on-court rebuilding and youth movement already in effect, the franchise also is taking the same approach upstairs.

Levien, 37, has earned a reputation as a versatile talent, having negotiated hundreds of millions of dollars in NBA contracts while showing an ability to find little-known players who come up big. Although Levien no longer will be an agent, Kings shooting guard Kevin Martin was chief among his clientele.

A graduate of Pomona College in Claremont who earned his law degree and master's in public policy from Michigan, Levien played basketball at Pomona and considered a career as a coach. According to the biography on his agency's Web site, he has a "comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement."

This is certainly an unexpected move and one that is fairly unusual (agents and front offices just don't swap personnel that often). It sounds like Petrie is very high on this guy, though.

While I may be reading too much into this, the move is making part of me think about whether Petrie is getting ready to pack it in and step away from the Kings. Petrie's contract runs through next season. This could be a way for him to get a replacement groomed so he can retire or move on when his contract runs out. As I said, I may be reading too much into this. But you can't deny that this is a possibility.

I think you're reading to much into it... I'm not sure they'd hire an agent as a "to-be groomed" as the next GM. I don't think you could ever seriously hire a agent as a full time GM, especially not one representing one of your players. Imagine the can of worms that would open.

It's not unheard of for NBA organizations to have a cap and CBA rules expert, which I believe what his specialty as an agent is.

Well he's is clearly giving up his career as an agent. I'll trust Petries judgement on this one. And it does kind of look like Petrie may be on his way out, maybe not though.

This is an interesting move. Teams are cutting down on personnel to reflect declining ticket sales, they wouldn't just hire another Assistant GM with a salary in the hundreds of thousands only to have another CBA expert on board. Petrie's contract runs through 2010, and he'll be 62. I can't imagine that he's not thinking about retirement.

It's hard to say anything with certainty, but it makes a lot of sense that way. There is no specific qualification to be a GM in the NBA. But, Levien has a nice eye for talent (his clients include Martin, Luol Deng, Hedo, and Udonis Haslem), is proven to be a terrific negotiator (he fleeced the Bulls into giving Deng a $71 million contract), is a CBA expert, and everybody says he's a renaissance man type of person.

If Petrie really likes the guy, then I wouldn't mind grooming Levien as his successor. But then again, this is all really premature (like most discussion on the forum  )

Worst case scenario, but also a possibility,

Could Petrie be fed up with the Maloofs involvements with the team? In terms of roster/personnel/rebuilding-contending issues.

I doubt it, otherwise he wouldn't have signed that extension. I think he's pretty buddy buddy with the Magoofs.
