Draft Workouts...Who's Coming and more

Workouts are getting under way and Petrie will likely look at a lot of guys. This thread is intended to be a spot to list the guys coming in and to post reviews of the workouts (if any come out). Please don't turn this into a thread about who we should take or as a place to put mock drafts...we have other threads for those topics. Lets just keep this to the workouts.

Anyone who runs across workout related info, please post here.

Blurb from the Bee this morning: list for the first pre-draft workout scheduled for today.

The Kings announced the prospects who will be joining Jrue Holiday in Thursday's workout. Beyond the UCLA point guard, it will be guards Aaron Jackson (Duquesne), Josh Akognon (Cal State Fullerton), Brandon Ewing (Wyoming), forward Tremaine Townsend (Cal State Northridge), and center John Bryant (Santa Clara).

Hey! I already posted that in the Rubio/#4 thread! Lock this thread. Image

Seriously though, I really like how we will workout Holiday off the bat.

The problem is with Holiday is that he may be a great workout player, but choke on the court like Alexander last year. He showed nothing at UCLA, and does not deserve to be a top ten pick. He is going to have to show a lot in these workouts to be considered a top player.

Holiday led his high school team to 2 state championships at PG which isn't exactly choking. He was not special last year at the SG but was playing out of position. He impressed me in the games in the tourney but Collison is really clutch which was why Holiday never got a shot. I agree Holiday would probably take the longest to develop. Holiday's game is like Evans good to the basket not great shooter and solid PG. But if they want a guy who can lock up other PG and get to the basket he is very good. He is a guy I would think would be Chauncey Billups like career at best.

All I have to say is Tony Parker at one point had a hard time making the ball hit the floor with his shot. Some people just can't shoot. Other people just don't work at it.

[edit]

Holdiay, Evans, and Jennings (In no order per say) are really the guys we should be looking at with the 4th pick. I don't know how the Rubio situation will pan out, but these three guys all to me can fit in one way or another. I think everyone knows who I prefer, but I'm not sold on anyone.

I've always been a big fan of Holiday, but everyone slapped me earlier because draft sites had him going late 20s. I'm perfectly happy with Holiday, Jennings or Evans. All talented PGs (each with a different skillset) that I'm exciting about getting.

Josh Akognon has actually been working out at Saint Mary's for the past month or so. I see him and a couple of our ball players in the gym when we go for my bball class. He's a late second round pick IMO.

Hey guys, there is a mock draft going on in the Draft Forum. Dallas in currently on the clock at #22, but I expect them to have a pick in quickly. If one of you wants to make a pick for the Kings at #23 we would appreciate your input.

Thanks,
Gopher

edit - the Kings are on the clock at #23!

It's possible that Petrie is having Holliday in with the idea that he is likely to be available at #23. Don't forget what many of the pundits are saying that after the top 2 (top three in my estimation because with Thabeet most GM's can't resist the size) everything from there through (depending who you talk to)30 - 60 is a toss up because there are equal positives and negatives about ALL of those players.

If we are serious about Holiday I don't think we should wait until 23 either.

Now that is a list of studs right there! Haha. Better not see ANY of those names called with our 2nd rounder. If Petrie uses a pick that high in the 2nd round like toilet paper again I'll be pissed.

Petrie won't take Jennings he has Jason Williams mentally weak written all over him. He couldn't qualify for school then couldn't even make it though a season on one team. Jason Williams was kicked off his college team twice and he was just not mentally tough which was why we traded him for Bibby. I like Holiday also but no way he slips past 10.

Jennings definitely doesn't seem to fit a Petrie pick. Terrible shooting %, bad decision making, etc.

I do think Jennings is a better shooter than his % shows however. Playing out of rhythm the way he was in Europe can really mess with your stats in a bad way.

EDIT: I just realized I went against what the thread was supposed to be. Sorry.

Here is several tidbits on Holiday's workout today. (Supposedly, we will have more information on Holday's workout tomorrow though):

So after the 18-year-old who spent one season at UCLA worked out for the Kings on Thursday afternoon, I asked if he could honestly see himself deserving the call when they make the No. 4 pick on June 25.

"I see myself as a No. 1 pick," Holiday quickly responded. "That's what I'm shooting for. I'm shooting for the best, shooting for the stars. The sky's the limit. That's what I'm going for. The Clippers have (No. 1 pick). That's right at home."

Of course he could settle for No. 4 too.

"I think it'd be great (to wind up in Sacramento)," Holiday said. "I heard that they need a new point guard. That's what I'm here for. I'm definitely here to run the team and distribute the ball to Kevin Martin and (Francisco) Garcia. I think I could really fit in here."

We'll stay with Holiday for a minute here. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound, defensive-minded guard hasn't hired an agent and wouldn't say whether there was still a chance he would return to UCLA for his sophomore season.

"It's my first workout, so I'm going to go home and talk to my parents and some of my advisers," Holiday said. "(We'll) go over it and tell them how I think it went, that I think it went well. From there we're going to make a decision."

Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie, who ran the workout as always, was very positive about Holiday's workout as well.

"I was very impressed," he told reporters afterward. "He had great size and strength. He shot really well in the drills...He was really alert, attentive. He's obviously been well coached. He was very good.
"He had a good attitude out there. I talked to him a little bit before the workout, and he seems like a real genuine personality."

Interesting read. I still don't believe we should take him that high but I would agree he has a super high ceiling. I just think we need a safer bet at this point.

Well, if he continues to impress i.e. more fabulous workouts and good/great Chicago Measurements event, I would love Holiday with the pick. I pushed three guys so far in the year: Harden, Jennnings and Holiday. Either of those guys are icing in the cake IMO.

I'm exceptionally happy to see him working out so well. I think he's my favorite of the three PGs (Holiday, Jennings, Evans).

Holiday is probably the biggest wild card out there to me. But after reading those quotes from his workout, he sounds very promising, and i belive it said he is 18, so he is still damn young.

More about Holiday:

Holiday shows Kings he has pro potential

The procession of point guard prospects expected to audition for the Kings began Thursday with a freshman whose college coach describes as "someone who makes other people better."

That would be refreshing.

The last Kings point guard to do that?

Um ... um ... um.

Jrue Holiday, the first player to visit, would rather pass than shoot, prefers fundamental to flamboyant, and believes his questionable perimeter skills will improve when he shifts from shooting guard to his natural point guard position. He also hopes to be drafted No. 1 by his hometown Los Angeles Clippers, which suggests a terrific sense of humor, an inflated sense of his value, or an innocent's flawed perception of L.A.'s weaker NBA sibling.

He really doesn't want to play for the Clips, although he doesn't know that yet. He's only 18. He'll figure it out. Meantime, he will work out for several NBA teams to gain a sense of where he would be selected June 25, then decide whether to return to UCLA.

Here's a hint: Based on his chat with reporters at the Kings' practice facility, Holiday sat up straight but definitely leaned toward the pros. And he won't be discouraged when he hears Geoff Petrie's public summation.

After Holiday's two-hour audition that consisted of psychological tests, shooting and passing drills, agility exercises and three-on-three scrimmages, Petrie made it abundantly clear that he was impressed.

"He had great size and strength," Petrie said. "He shot it really well in the drills. He was really attentive, obviously well coached to this point. He was very good."

In the brief time journalists could observe the scrimmage, Holiday had no trouble staying in front of his man or getting to the basket. His ballhandling seemed a little loose, though, and he failed to convert the layup after one particularly shifty drive - an aberration according to Bruins coach Ben Howland.

"He's a good shooter, (adept) at drawing and kicking, penetrating and finishing," Howland said via cell phone. "He can really finish over length. He didn't have the ball as much ... because we had (Darren) Collison back, and in five-on-five, you'll see his greatest strength is his feel for the game. He's an outstanding passer."

Furthermore, Howland refutes the notion that Holiday's freshman season was disappointing, though his modest numbers have left NBA scouts differing wildly about his readiness. The former prep standout at Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, where his mother, Toya, is the dean and the women's basketball coach, averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 27.1 minutes.

Holiday nonetheless rates higher than Collison, partly because of his defense and body type. Almost 6-foot-5 in sneakers and a toned 200 pounds, he has long arms and huge hands.

When Holiday, dressed in a Bob Marley T-shirt and blue gym shorts, met with journalists, the hand-held portion of the microphone disappeared within his web of fingers.

Howland, who coached NBA point guards Jordan Farmar and Russell Westbrook, said Holiday's massive hands remind him of another former player. "John Stockton," said Howland, a former Gonzaga assistant.

As the Kings' point guard search continues, the skills and body types of the participants will differ dramatically. Some will be small and quick (Jonny Flynn), others more athletic (Tyreke Evans) or superior shooters (Stephen Curry).

Then there's that Spanish star who tantalizes with his length, exceptional playmaking and dynamic overall game (Ricky Rubio).

As for the last Kings point guard who made the game easier for his teammates? Forget semantics. Doug Christie was listed as the shooting guard, but he was the playmaker.

After checking out that vid and reading all the stuff on Holiday I'm more into him as high as 4 than I was. I like his belief that he wants to defend 1-4, doesn't matter to him. And although I don't know if all his hype coming into college was/is true, I know the kid is a TOP NOTCH defender and that is our biggest weakness.
