Josh Smith

Post#1 » by PetrieUnderstudy » Tue Jun 16, 2009 4:32 am

It's mentioned that Hawks may want to trade Josh Smith due to his attitude towards Mike Woodson and the Hawks need to resign Marvin Williams and others.

Can we do something to make it work? Can we use trade exception and players? Kenny Thomas' expiring? Something?

Kenny Thomas (expiring), Donte Greene & #23 for Josh Smith, resigned Zaza Pachulia & #19

It would be a fun team to watch with Westphal's run and gun and the following roster:

#4 Ricky Rubio/Beno Udrih/#31 Patrick Mills
Kevin Martin/Francisco Garcia/Rashard McCants
Josh Smith/Andres Nocioni/#19 Terrence Williams
Jason Thompson/Ike Diogu
Spencer Hawes/Zaza Pachulia

Not going to happen. Why would they give up a great talent like Smith for an expiring/unproven prospect/late draft pick? No way.

My thing with this particular line up is the lack of outside shooting at the perimeter spots. Between Rubio and Smith...damn...Is this upcoming season Josh Smith's final year of his contract?

Our PF and C would be better shooters than our PG and SF

Yep, thats what kills it for me too. Smith has alot of talent, but his outside shot is terrible. I watched the Hawks-Heat series, and he was really ineffective and kept taking outside shots.
Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

You see, I think he fits GREAT, why? BECAUSE our bigs are good shooters! Grab a good shooting PG at 23 or 31(Teague, Mills DOUGLAS!). Hope Beno bounces back with his outside shot and Smith fits in PERFECTLY at the 3 for us.

If not, then we can go small and play Noc at the 3 and Smith at 4, and Noc brings added shooting as well. It gives us versatility and complimentary pieces.

If Rubio and Evans are gone at 4(possible), then I definitely entertain this idea.

C: Hawes, Diogu
PF: Thompson, Noc, Thomas
SF: Smith, Greene
SG: Martin, Garcia
PG: Beno, Teague/Mills/DOUGLAS

I like that line-up.

Look at adding an upgrade at the 1 next season either through the draft, FA or via trade.

Absolutely NO WAY Evans is gone at 4.

I would have to think that the Hawks would ask for Martin.

So, it would come down to how much you value Martin.

I think I would do it if Harden is there at #4, also I would want the Hawks to give up #19 too.

To enable the Kings to grab Maynor.

I think we would have to give up way too much to bring the guy in. However, if the Hawks really want to have some room to sign some of their free agents they could way until after July 1st, Move him to the Kings for something like Greene and the 31st pick. I know that is no where near his value, but if I am not sure what other teams would offer for him.

+1.

No way I trade Martin for him. For one thing, if we went that route by drating Harden & trading Martin, we could get something better to help the team, preferably a good starting point guard to solidify our back court.

I dont "dislike" Smith, its all about what we'd have to give up to get him. From our perspective, I'd possibly give up the 23, or Greene and 31 (mentioned above). But I don't see the Hawks doing that, unless they totally just want to dump salary, which in that case, it's possible.

Supposedly, all the Hawks want is some cap relief so they can resign Williams/Bibby. I can't see the Hawks asking for too much (Martin) when the taker of Josh Smith has to deal with his trade kicker.

I actually like Smith as a player but he doesn't really fit with our current roster and the team that trades for him would have to pay him $7.2 million straight away. I can't see the Maloofs even touching that.

I didnt even know he had a trade kicker. I actually could see him fitting in prefect with this team. He is a high energy guy. Rebounds pretty well, and can shoot well. He would be a great piece to use for building this team in a playoff team. If all we have to give up is Greene and the 31st Pick I think it would be well worth it.

I can't believe some people are arguing against this deal. We move up from #23 to #19. We get a young center in Zaza and we get a 24 year old SF/PF to add to our core without giving up any pieces but KT's expiring. Are you people crazy? Kings do this in a sec trade kicker be damned. Why would ATL do it?

Oh, I don't necessarily think his "style of play" really would make him a bad fit but more the idea that we already have so much money tied up in the SF position. Economically, it doesn't make sense for the Kings really which is unfortunate because Smith is one of the most versatile players in the league.
