Hawes puts on 10lbs + other tibdits

According to new coach Paul Westphal, all is forgiven and forgotten. And his initial impression of his young center? Both the body of work and the body were impressive. Underneath that sweaty T-shirt, Hawes' shoulders appear broader and thicker. He has added approximately 10 pounds to his 242-pound frame without increasing body fat.
"Maybe I'm finally starting to fill out," he said, laughing. "The thing I learned is that you can't force it. You don't want to pack on the wrong kind of weight because that causes you to lose flexibility. But I've been working hard all summer, six days a week, following (strength coach) Daniel Shapiro's program. I wanted to come down and show coach what I've been doing."
This is all good, because Westphal plans to use his skilled center in the low post, involve him more frequently in pick-and-rolls, and exploit his passing and perimeter shooting. He also wants Hawes to initiate contact and earn more trips to the foul line.

Hawes WILL be an All-Star center in this league one day(barring serious injury of course)...there's just a LACK of quality, skilled YOUNG centers in the league today. With Yao potentially out for good, Hawes Opportunity in the West grows. I still think he's AT least 3 years away from realizing that status, but it's not too far away. He's just too skilled a basketball player to not make the all-star game down the road.

Ya, they really have tried to develop their bodies, so lets see if that can translate to the hardwood. I really hope it doesn't end up like bibby a few years back.

I was thinking that. For JT it should be no problem cause he is more of a power guy anyways. But Hawes getting too big could be bad cause he does rely a lot on his high post/outside game.

Well it sounds like Spencer isn't really putting on too much weight, more so just muscle mass. He needs strength more than size, but some size will come with that. If there's one thing I'm not worried about when it comes to the decision making within this organization it's the decisions made by the the strength and conditioning guys. Daniel Shapiro is the man.

I'm pretty sure it is purely muscle mass. Hawes is pretty much now a legitimate 250+ big man. I really want Hawes to play more in the post with that frame in the upcoming season.
If you look at his offense:
52% comes from jumpshots. His eFG is 40.2%
48% comes from inside. His eFG is 58.7%.
If you take a look at the premier post player in Al Jefferson:
51% comes from jumpshots. His eFG is 37.5%
49% comes from inside. His eFG is 62.9%
It seems like both Hawes and Jefferson have the same offensive selection but Jefferson is hitting his inside shots nearly 5% more than Hawes! That is significant. But Jefferson is a worse jumpshooter than Hawes. But his post play makes for it.
Hawes need to hit the 60.0%+ range eFG% next year of inside shots to be truly take a step ahead in his development IMO. His former frame caused his ineffectiveness of his offensive game. He was regulated to jumpshots most of the time due to other players pushing his position away. With the added muscle mass to his frame, we hope to see a stronger and firmer position of Hawes in the post.

Great to hear. I hope he continues to add more. His jumper isn't really consistent enough right now to be drastically affected by added weight. I hope he can get up to 250 without adding any real fat.

You know I can still understand how the way Hawes handled it could have been better, but I really don't understand the dumping on he's taking for not playing. I didn't see Al Thornton or Jeff Green at SL, why's nobody biting their heads off!?

Some of this is the normal course of development for a kid who is not even 22 yet! Remember that and realize that he will fill out even more and just needs to keep at converting that mass to muscle rather than allowing himself to be slowed down by laying on too much fat.
