When will Westphal turn things around?

Post#1 » by cdt3 » Sat Sep 26, 2009 7:59 am

Just thinking about how many people bashed Petrie for picking up Westphal, even RealGM gave him a D-. Really? A D- for a veteran coach with only 4 current NBA coaches having a better winning % (PJax, Pop, and BScott). A coach who has never had a below .500 year on any team in 7 years and 2 teams. Including a Seattle team that looked like it was going to fall apart when his star PF got a drug suspension that George Karl bailed out on. That team only had Gary Payton and Westphal got them back on track. He is perfect for a knucklehead free team which Petrie has ensured. He is a much better fit for the Petrie system than any of the former Kings coaches (Musselman or Theus or Natt). He is a very good teacher for a young team.

What are some positive signs that we will see in the preseason that maybe Westphal is a good pickup as a coach?

Since training camp starts the 28th and preseason games start the 9th I am excited to talk about the season closing in pretty quickly.

Well, I don't know about turning things around entirely but I hope to immediately see a team that knows what they are doing to a certain degree and has the base knowledge of whatever system Westphal instills.

I just hope he installs a legitimate offensive system for this roster. Our previous coaches lacked offensive (and defensive) systems.

He's not going to.

Our problems are beyond just the head coach. Aldeman wasn't the only problem. Mussleman wasn't the only problem. Theus and Nate weren't the only problems.

Our team has issues at every level of the organization. It's pointless to point simply at 1 coach and expect him to turn everything around cause no coach can or will.

How or when was Adelman the frickin' problem. He came as close to a ring as ANY coach in the history of the NBA.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to coach 5 vs. 8. You can't do it.

I meant when everyone was calling for his head and up to us letting him go. Every single year since our title runs, we've been blaming it on the coaches. They can only do so much. Yes you need a good coach to be successful, but a coach can only lead a team so far. And as of now, our team and many other aspects of our organization are too flawed to be led anywhere

We were a team that was declining at the time. I don't think Rick would be an ideal fit an evidential rebuilding team in the Kings. The main problem with Rick was that he had a strict 7 or so rotation of players. He hardly plays players that doesn't plays much.

But I don't like the reason that the Maloofs said of not extending Rick though.

Well the one thing this team has going for it now is that it makes at least some sense when you look at it on paper. You can see how it could potentially work, the pieces fit a lot better than the mismatched rosters we've had in the past. Hopefully Westphal knows how to utilize them. Hopefully he isn't Theus who says we're a "high post" team and then talks about using the Triangle. Nice to have a coach with some real experience.

I think it was when Kevin Martin said: "Its nice to have a coach who has your back."

Westphal is a players coach. He has done this all before as a player AND AS A COACH.
