Melvin Ely/Lanny Smith Waived

Wednesday, October 21, 2009: SACRAMENTO, CA -- Following last night’s preseason game in Phoenix, the Sacramento Kings requested waivers on center-forward Melvin Ely and guard Lanny Smith, it was announced by Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. The Kings updated roster now stands at 14 players.

Ely, a seven-year NBA veteran, saw action in two preseason games, recording a point (1-2 FT) in five minutes off the bench. Smith played in one preseason game and was scoreless (0-2 FG, 0-1 3pt) in three minutes off the bench at Portland (10/6).

No surprises at all. I just don't understand why the Kings didn't bring in a guy like Bryant from Santa Clara to try and be a backup big guy. He was second in the nation behind Griffin last year plus and was a 7 footer who could score. The Kings right now are much improved on rebounding moving up from #29 last year to #6 right early this year. They could have still found time for Greene. I guess with Sean May they will weigh what they have with him this year and only bring him bring him back if he looks looks really good with no serious injuries. With Evans, Hawes, Garcia, are all also very good rebounders these guys will be in almost every game.
