Kevin Martin injury question

Post#1 » by Guy986 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 12:16 am

Can you tell a Rocket fan more about Martin's injury concern? Why did he miss so many games over the past few seasons? Were they freak injuries? Chronic?

Mostly freak injuries. Nothing chronic. However, he does have mighty skinny legs.

David Thorpe (Martin's trainer) recently said that his ankle injury was actually a minor injury that was misdiagnosed and treated incorrectly. He said that if that injury was treated properly, he would have only been out a few games.

Where did you hear that? That was really what wrecked Martin's career with the Kings.

Yeah, like when he played 40 minutes and scored 29 pts with a broken wrist (that required surgery). What a wimp.

his injuries were more of the freakish type. I'd say his injuries were more bad luck than anything else.

Having said that I wouldn't call him a physically "soft" player. I'm by no means saying he's a physical player either. I just think "these are the breaks" (yeah bad pun) applies here. Hopefully he holds up for the Rockets.

Sounds like something you would expect to hear from somebody close to a player who was bitter about his recent situation with the team.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

honestly....due to the fact that Kevin has been our #1 option the last 2 years, he has played extremely aggressive in that role and had a couple "freakish" accidents. I dont really think he is all that soft. He hits the ground hard a lot and usually gets right up. If you guys utilize him correctly he should be fine!

Yeah, no way that's correct. I watched that play in slow mo more than a few times. His foot went about as far back the other direction it possibly could without snapping his ankle. I still can't believe he didn't break his ankle. He is a tough ass dude despite what people think. He was getting a little teary eyed it hurt so bad but he walked on it right after it happened, shot his free throws, and then left the game. I'm sure he would have been better off if he just broke it. I mean, it looked THAT bad. Thank you very much Rob Kurz!!

The other injuries are freak injuries, but a player of Martins build shouldn't be playing the way he was. 10 times to the line a night was too much for such a slender body. I think Adelman will keep his need to draw contact to a minimum.

Yeah, no sh*t. He may be soft on defense but he is a tough guy in just about every other way. He needs to change his style, but I'll give him credit for the balls he does have. He doesn't have a problem hitting the deck and drawing contact.

Yeah. it has pretty much been said. Slender build + constantly trying to get to the line = lots of injuries. His body just can't handle the wear and tear he puts on it. You have to admire him in a way for constantly putting himself in a position to get injured the way he does despite his history. But at the same time, you kind of have to go "hey Kev, at what point does cause and effect come into play here?"

I mean it's tough, because it's also a big part of what makes him so good, but you have to think there's a happy medium here. But to answer your original question, no, he doesn't have any chronic issues.
