Rayan Rupert - New Zealand Breakers NBL

Post#1 » by MemphisX » Wed Jan 11, 2023 1:37 pm

I always like the guys that give me an excuse to listen to NBL broadcasts. He is finally back playing, so will enjoy watching him finish the season.

I give him a lot of credit for putting in the work on his outside shot. 25% from 3 last season.

15% from 3 during the FIBA U18 this past summer.

Then he moves up into the NBL, going against the best competition he's ever faced and so far he's shooting 42.2% from 3, wow. Still a fairly small sample size (3 attempts a game across 15 games) but so far, man - the improvement is very impressive.

The mechanics look smoother and cleaner on his shot with the Breakers too, compared to before. He must have gotten with a good shooting coach.

If he keeps it up, he's definitely a 1st rounder. Currently I have him as a late 1st rounder on my board, but he could certainly move up..

From what i recall, he prefers the midrange (and is a big fan of Derozan from an itw he had here) and his midrange jumper is more reliable.
He plays on both ends though, that's his best quality. There are more chances he impacts the win on a clutch block or a great steal than on a clutch shoot (for now, he's just 18 as we all know). The 3 pt % is not necessary something that big for him, i would say he needs to get a reliable floater and a better back to the basket game (he knows how to post up but he needs to be efficient considering the size/power advantage he will have at his position) to show he worked on his overall game.

The major improvement in nbl so far has been his consistency apparently. Here (in France, but he was just a "student athlete' basically), he was very up and down (knowing insep plays at a pro/semi pro level, thats eq. to a 3rd division league bball) including during his last eurobasket (U18), except for the defensive tasks (his versatility is really nice and he covers a lot of ground).

His sister was drafted at #12 in the wnba, would be funny if he could reach that spot. It's not that the 2023 competition on two ways wing/guards is that scary finally.

yea. he's gonna go a lot higher than people think come the draft imo, has a lot of athletic juice and is a legitimate two-way wing prospect with both on and off-ball scoring potential, can operate the middy at a decent level too. we'll see what happens @ combine but I am assuming a legit 6-7 with at least a 7-2 w/s.

he has some issues (questionable decision making, overdribbles at times, inconsistent shooter) but when you combine archetype, athletic profile with his shooting and two-way ceiling at the wings it's looking like he's a legit top 20 guy, maybe even higher.

he's definitely a defensive menace, not just a guy that people assume is good defensively because of his length, he makes a lot of game changing plays on that end, really fluid hips, mirrors well, fast hands.

wouldn't be surprised if he does go top 12, OKC took Dieng last yr in that range and Rupert seems just as good if not a better prospect.

This is what I have been saying. He is going to be a forward that can guard up and down. And his offensive base is intriguinging enough that he looks like a lottery pick to me but that is in a normal draft. So many 6'5 to 6'10 wing/forwards in this draft, it will come down to team tastes, interviews and backgrounds.
