The Mavs tanked so they could get a top 10 pick which they ended up using on Lively. Clingan was taking #7 and Edey #9. He's huge and very long and sometimes has surprising agility but his production is limited due to minutes and how many mouths there are to feed at Duke so it's a tough evaluation. Having played for just 5 years it suggests he's just scratching the surface. Top 10 pick is not off the table. It'd be nice if they'd showcase him a little. I feel like that would change perceptions.

Mark Williams was as a much better prospect and even he had to spend a couple of years at Duke, and has real tape in the NBA, not sure how that's comparable to Maluach

you talked about how VJ should stay in school but it's probably much more beneficial to a guy like Maluach.

no, no he wasn't. They're pretty identical as freshmen.

Except Mark had double the block rate and Maluach is a better FT shooter. But yah, I don't think Williams had a significant edge as a freshman. I'd still say he was better b/c the blocks are more important, but my memory at the time was that people were disappointed with Williams and thought he was really immobile relative to expectations.

I just have trouble seeing a guy like this not getting played off the court in the playoffs.

Does anyone have a good explanation why his block percentage is so low?

Because defense goes beyond being tall with a big wingspan. Timing, feel, instincts, footwork.

He doesn’t have them yet. Not consistently.
