Best fit for the Wolves?

Post#1 » by shane5153 » Sat Feb 2, 2008 4:48 am

With a top 3 pick likely coming to the wolves who would you say is the best fit? Beasley? Rose? Mayo? Some say rose but we have foye as our PG, some say Beasley but some "scouts" say he cant play the 3 in the nba, i havent heard mayo's name in the mix but i think he would be a GREAT fit next to foye and brewer.

Not for nothing but you go with Rose and figure out what to do with Foye later. Foye as a starting PG? I don't know about that.

At the stage of development the Wolves are at, I don't think you really need to worry about fits in terms of positions on the floor. If you have the #1 pick, you get the best available player that you're comfortable building around, i.e. someone with the talent to lead a team and the character to lead a team, if available. That's the most important thing. You worry about positions later. For now, you just need to worry about having someone with both the talent and character to be a key piece to build around.

Wolves have won 5 of 7, including the one point loss at Boston. That was preceded by a last second loss at Denver. At what point should the team consider fit?

I wouldn't argue they draft small because they have Jefferson. I would argue they draft a big to pair with Jefferson, because that's what they don't have. They've got a ton of young 1/2/3s.

Beasley's the run away #1 pick, so you've gotta go with him.

So here's the question...Do you willingly put your best player and building block at the wrong spot and make him uncomfortable and draft Beasley because he's the BPA.

TWolves aren't getting the best seed in the lottery, besides when Miami plays the Knicks, idon't see many more wins for them.

I don't think Minny gets the #1 pick, so they will either have the 2nd 3rd or 4th. Which means Rose could be gone, I would pick Lopez, I like him.

It's all about ping pong balls - even if Miami loses the rest of their games, they only have a 25% shot at the top pick. With the forth worst record, the Wolves would have a 12% shot.

Basically, the way I see it, unless you have at least two or maybe even three players you're confident with as your 1-2-3 punch, you don't draft based on positional need. What core of three players on the Wolves do you see leading the team to a title? Jefferson, Jaric, and Gomes? No, of course not. Jefferson's the only guy who has stood out as someone you can really build around, and he can play PF or C, so you don't worry about positions right now. You get another guy that can be part of that 1-2-3 punch. Until you have a 1-2-3 that can compete with the Garnett-Pierce-Allen's, Dirk-Howard-Terry's, Bryant-Gasol-Bynum's, Duncan-Manu-Parker's, and Nash-Marion-Amare's of the world, you don't really worry about positional fit. You need to get the top-end talent with the character to build around. If you get those guys, you work the rest out down the road. Don't pass a chance to get one of those guys because you're trying to make positional fit's when your team has a winning percentage of .250.

The one exception would probably be if you have Chris Paul and nothing else to build around, you're not going to draft another 6'0 pure point guard (unless the talent difference is so ridiculously large between the #1 and #2 pick), but for the most part, most elite players are capable of playing multiple positions. You draft the best ones and work the rest out later, until you have 2 or 3 core guys you really feel can lead you deep, because that's the most important thing in building any team, and those are the hardest pieces to come across.
