Chicago is a big market too. I'm sure Stern wouldn't mind them being a top team again.

Huh? Chicago getting #1 is probably just more ammo for the conspiracy theorists. Where is Derrick Rose from?

Rigging the lottery would be a federal crime. The NBA makes plenty of money as it is and even when they suck the big market teams make money.

Although it's impossible to say one way or another, that's terrible logic.

Using that logic there would never be any corporate crime since corporations already have so much money.

Never underestimate avarice and foolhardiness.

But it's pointless speculation.

Terrible logic? Not wanting to break the law is terrible logic? Rigging the lottery wouldnt bring Stern or any of the other NBA execs a ton of more money, and I dont think they are going to risk time in prison to just make the Knicks a little better. I think thats pretty sound logic.

You can debate whether or not Stern and company have the temerity and foolhardiness but to say there is no advantage is plain ignorance.

Improving big market teams which increases ratings not only boosts the ego of NBA execs, it boosts their wallets.

It boosts their wallets, but lets look at what all would have to happen for this to work to their advantage:
They have to find a way to rig the lottery. I dont know if you were aware, but they dont just pick envelopes out of a plastic sphere anymore. They use a lottery system with ping pong balls that have numbers on them. You tell me how they would do that. Two, there would have to be a player they were sure would boost said big market team into the next level. If there was ever a lottery to rig, it would have been the LeBron lottery. Three, if they really wanted to make it worthwhile, they would have to have the owners of the big market franchise give them some serious kickbacks, making even more legal problems. Otherwise, it just wouldnt be worth it. Stern is super conscious of the NBA's image. I cant imagine him risking his very good reputation just to make the Knicks (whose owner he hates by the way) a little bit better. So, yeah, there might be an advantage, but to me (ye of little logic), the negatives far outweigh the positives. The risk would be too high with the reward too small.

If it was rigged, Greg Oden or Kevin Durant would be playing on the east coast.

This year did not appear to be rigged.

It cant be rigged because the executives of each lottery team witness the lottery process, but all of their communication devices are stripped away. The representatives that are on the podium don't know the outcome. The only people that know is the people inside the lottery room.

Chicago gets a hometown kid, Stern's Golden Boy Wade gets a stud running mate and Hoiberg still looks like he is going to cry.

(No need to cry Fred you get Lopez a 7 foot center to line up next to Big Al)
I despise fans that cheer on a team from up north or one that resembles a dinosaur. oh wait...

Oj Mayo isn't much to cry over.

He's not quite Beasley or Rose, but he most likely will be a stud SG,and I'm not so sure if Minnesota is sold on McCants.
