The reason that Mayo doesn't get to the line that much is completely related to the USC offense and his teammates. Because they lack 3pt shooters the paint is always clogged and that leaves very few driving lanes to the hoop. If you put him on the hoosiers with guys like Crawford and Bassett then you would probably see him attack the basket more.

the reason Mayo doesn't get to the free throw line is because he just isn't that athletic.

If anyone doesn't see why it would be understandable for OJ Mayo to not give 100% is a very closed minded person.
Why do people go to school after high school? Why do people work OT on their stressful jobs?
We have a world that revolves around money.
And for some people who are blessed with rare abilities their meal ticket is on their athletic ability.
And we're not just talking about a 5 or 6 figure salary. We're talking about contracts that could set them for life.
The idea that it's unacceptable not to risk that is ridiculous

that is interesting, but the team that signs you can always offer you more money than any other team, so i think that would effect his decision also. What he is saying, is no different than what Gilbert Arenas has said recently and I don't see him receiving that much crap for it. OJ Mayo seems to be getting the Brandon Roy treatment with all the crap being slung at him for not being athletic, or not having much upside and being a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of player.

I haven't heard people question Mayo's upside or athleiticsm, I have heard them question his desire, his shot selection, and his teamwork. And for the record, Mayo is not half the player Roy was when he was catching all that grief.

Mayo is plenty athletic.
No, he really is not. He's no slug but there's some perception among the throng that he's a top notch athletic specimen (no doubt from all the he's the next Kobe nonsense) which is just not true.

I think even I am on Pierce's level of athleticism, haha, all joking aside, I agree with both of you......OJ is plenty athletic, but yes, he is definitely not "elite" in this category...which is actually why I have been on record that I believe he is not a superstar #1 option guy, rather a very good robin to someone's batman....plus, the right way in which he plays the game is more suited for that role anyway and would be a shame to waste

Something to note with Mayo/USC is that USC may have the worst depth of any half-decent team in the NCAA. They go 6 deep, seven if absolutely necessary. There have been games where OJ has had to play nearly all 40 minutes because of the lack of warm bodies. Hes had to play throw nagging injuries because there is no one to back him up.
My thoughts are that the health concerns he mentions are relative to the fact that Hackett still has a bad back and that Mayo has a lot of nagging injuries that other players might get a game or 2 to rest. Its more a valid concern about the team situation/structure than Mayo looking out solely for numero uno (thought I wouldnt be shocked if that has something to do with it).
