He's shown about as much defensive skills as a Demarcus Cousins with way slower hands and more restraint.

yeah his effort is going to be the key. when the kid locks in and decides to play a little harder he's pretty good in the areas that come in question. he'll slide better, defend smarter and hit the defensive glass with more effort than he does throughout the course of the game. I wanna say the coasting is a role on the team thing and will iron itself out when he hits the league and is forced to give 110 every night. Time will tell though.

I think the OP was trying to compare him to Rip

Defense and athleticism.

Oh, so only the main things that really make or break guards at the next level? Ok...

Concerns are spot on, this is Russell's scouting report on nbadraft.net:
"Far below NBA standard in regard to explosivenes and athleticism ... At 6-2, he's extremely small for the NBA shooting guard position, and it will likely keep him from being much of a defender at the next level"

Sorry, my fault, that's actually Stephen Curry's scouting report.

Reminds me of Penny. He handle, the footwork and vision. I like his game over any other player in this draft. Mudiay included

I still think Manu is the best comparison for him for his skillset

A skinnier/younger Brandon Roy is what he reminds me of. Russell is better then Roy was at 18-19yo though

I agree. He has that all round craftiness to his game.

Manu has great length 6'11 wingspan for a guard. Brandon Roy has a exceptional vertical leap 40 plus. Russell doesn't have the length or the athleticism of the two. Russell also isn't as quick, long or explosive as Penny Hardaway.

I see a better Monte Ellis type combo guard at the next level. An allstar caliber Bradley Beal is a good comparison too.

notice he said SKILLSET. He never said anything about height, length, or athleticism. SKILLSET wise the comp makes some sense.

How does the Brad Beal comp work?

With D.Russ' stock through the absolute roof right, (receiving number 2 slots on some mocks) i wonder if that MPrice25 poster is still holding on to the Russell is coming back to school theory.

I don't get how people compare him to strong post up guards who are exceptional finishers. Curry makes sense to me.

his pull up game is Frank Mendrano mean

i keep going into each game thinking this will be the one that he cools off and those jumpers don't fall. I mean it can't last forever right? at some point they just don't fall right? he can't keep dropping contested "bad shots" right? and each time they fall just as wet as the last time. everytime he releases a jumper i think its good, same feeling i get with Steph when i watch him.

Yup, and Curry is arguably the MVP of the NBA. People are trying to point out weaknesses in the guy, when - if they just look at what he can do - he can become one of the top players in the NBA. He's absurdly good at playing basketball. He's not just a shooter - Last night he got 14 rebounds against my Terps. Nobody on MD got even half that.

If Harden or Curry wins the MVP this year, it won't hurt Russell's chances of going top 2 or 3.

I don't know if he's the best player in this year's draft (I think he's a future star, not sure about superstar)... but I would be fairly surprised if he didn't win ROY (on a suitable team), and absolutely astounded if he turns out to be a bust. He's the sort of player that usually does well early in their careers.

How does the Brad Beal comp work?

Brad Beal had an NBA body coming into the league and a more explosive leaper (39").
It's hard to find a comp for him that hasn't busted going by size and athleticism (Rivers, McCollum, Turner...in that mold).

While it's tempting to say you might get a 6'5" PG, RPM shows the top 3 PGs are all 6'1" and under, it's just not that big of an advantage because your sacrificing foot speed , unless you have elite wingspan like Wall does, then it can pay dividends..
