Re: Joel Embiid
Embiid has a legit shot of being one of the top 3 players in the NBA in 5 years. His top-end prime potential is stratospheric, maybe something like 26/14/4a/3b/2s as a mix of Hakeem/Hibbert/Marc Gasol/Robert Parish/Wes Unseld.
It would be amazing if the Pelicans got him and paired him with AD. Embiid/AD would have a legit shot of being the best pf/c combo of all time.

His strengths are huge, but am I the only one who thinks his athleticism is a concern. Not that it's a weakness but if it isn't a strength either, that limits his upside. I wouldn't call him more athletic for his position than Jabari personally

Wow. That is the closest thing to a Dreamshake I've seen in a while.

He's very agile though and moves his feet well. He's fast enough and jumps high enough. Being super athletic at C isn't a priority as much as it is for the other positions in the NBA. Being tall, long, skilled and exceptional timing is far more important than how high you can leap when you're almost 7-1. I guarantee you GMs would take a skilled 7-0 with average athleticism over a unskilled 7-0 exceptional athleticism.

Yeah he's definitely not the best defender but that's a move few centers in the NBA can even make look so smooth regardless of the defender.

1 thing that I liked about that move is how he kept his pivot foot and didn't get called for a travel. Most players would have moved.

Compare him to all-stars Brook Lopez, Roy Hibbert, and Marc Gasol and tell us if you think he's not athletic enough.

Sure but if drafting Embiid 1st overall, I'd think teams would be hoping for a higher ceiling than those 3 players.

The thing is that his ceiling is the best parts of all of those players.

Seems like a healthy/non-headcase version of Bynum.

Re: Joel Embiid
That move was just nasty. Its that kind of footwork and smoothness to his game at such as early stage that has his upside through the roof.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

His athletic ability is good enough to thoroughly dominate in the NBA to the tune of potential prime numbers around 26/14/4/3/2...along with being a tremendously positive force in terms of leadership and influence on team culture. That is easily worth the #1 pick in this draft. It's true that if he were even more athletic he could have even higher top-end potential, but his current top-end is already HOF caliber.
He'll be more athletic than almost every center he plays against, whereas Parker will be less athletic than most of the sf's he'll face. When I call up the list of the top 30 rebounding centers in the NBA, I see very few who are better athletes than a prime Embiid. Maybe Howard, Drummond, Jordan, and Noah (if we're simplistically defining athleticism using the old wooden standards of strength, quickness/speed, and jumping ability)? But I would still expect Embiid to have quite a bit of success against all of those guys, anyway, due to being a mentally dominant player (much like how guys like Bird, McHale, Walton, etc used their brains to great effect). He'd probably humiliate them quite often and have them in constant foul trouble.
Besides, I think what some people are seeing as 'limited athleticism' is mostly just him having weak/undeveloped muscles, which is the result of having never lifted any weights before this semester and from just being physically immature. He's got weak legs right now, and it shows. But when I project his development forward 5 years, giving him 5 years in strength and nutrition programs while becoming a physically mature man, I see a beast with more than enough athleticism to dominate.

Yeah, if people remember what Hibbert and Gasol looked like at that age, they hardly resembled physically what they became, because they likely had no clue about weight lifting and nutrition.
