Why did he refuse to play at Kentucky again?

Because he didn’t go to UK to play basketball, he went there to collect a check. By the time he reclassified it was too late to go to G League, so he just went to UK where he could collect 7 figures while training at a world class facility getting ready for the draft.

Doesn't really make sense. If he'd played he could have competed for the #1 pick.

Or he could have been rusty or a bad fit or got hurt or whatever and dropped his stock.

You will be seeing more and more kids that are the top of their high school class not play until they are drafted. There is very little upside for them to do so. Sharpe sat out and still went 6. If you know you are top ten why do anything? Shut it down and wait for the $. No need to risk it.

Or you can be like Wemby who has nothing to gain by playing and play because you have competitive fire in your belly. Would MJ or Kobe have shut it down for a year? Hell no. Plus these guys can get insurance against injuries if they are worried about that.

He didnt have his first practice until Jan 6th, the team had already played 14 games (over 1/3 of the season). He didnt start practicing with the team for another few weeks (right before the Auburn game, which was their 19th game).

So he basically didnt start practicing with the UK team until the season was close to 2/3s over. So you got a couple things going against him.

1. Obviously had very little practice time and time to build chemistry with the team. These college teams practice for months prior to the start of the season.
2. Didnt get to play against horrible mid major teams to slowly build up to get used to the speed of the game. Wouldve came in right in the middle of SEC play.

There is a much better chance if he played he wouldnt have looked good and couldve hurt his draft stock, then him helping it in that situation.

So again he went to UK only because of the big NIL deals that the big schools pump out for these high end recruits.

Dont see Scheyer needing to do this to gain momentum on the recruiting trail. That is why Cal allowed it with UK, it had been awhile since he could go out on the recruiting trail and claim he landed a top recruit and its been like 5 years since UK had a top 5 pick (I know Sharpe didnt go top 5, but he couldve). Scheyer right now is just on a different level when it comes to recruiting. So dont see him saying okay for a recruit to come in just to collect NIL.

How much is Sharpe going to make in his career? And how much is the premium?

If MJ came along in this era and was number 1 in his class in high school (fyi- he wasn’t) there would be grown people in the room telling him to shut it down and wait for the draft. This is the era we are in, adjust to it.

The trouble with this is it assumes the only risk is dropping due to injury or not looking good.

What about the risk of dropping due to getting passed by people who do play?

Sharpe was the number 3 recruit in his class but went 7th in the draft, thats a $13m difference between what he would have got if he had been drafted at his recruiting spot vs where he actually got drafted.

The risks and rewards go in both directions

You are 17.

Do nothing and you are a multi millionaire drafted likely top ten in the NBA.

Or…do something and risk getting hurt or dropping out of the top ten for some other reason.

It’s an easy choice.

No good parent would pick the later option for their kid. It’s a no brainer.

If you go to college and get injured you have the couple of million you made from going to college or the G League , if you don't go and get injured you are down that money . Seems a no brainer to be a couple of million richer

When NIL money becomes eligible is definitely part of the calculation and I’m not an expert in this subject. But didn’t Bronny just get NIL money and he has not played or committed to a college?

Imagine multi millions can be made in the NBA for just playing high school ball. And even busts that go really high based on potential generally get second contracts worth tens of millions more (see Bagley, Marvin).

If a 17 year old is on the verge of generational wealth and it can be achieved by doing nothing, or risked by doing something… any rationale adult is telling that kid to stay on the couch in the basement, don’t post anything online and pretend every word you say is recorded and can be used against you.

That’s it. There is no other mature answer. None. Get the ******* money. There is plenty of time and opportunities to work out the rest.

The quickest and surest way to the money is to play , anything else is putting your chance of earning at risk.

Have a career ending car crash or get diagnosed with a heart problem during your year off and all of that money vanishes.

The main reason not to play is the one reason that will never be considered which is what if you suck, and nobody is going to even consider this.

Jaden Hardy was #4 on 247 and was picked #37. Hardy got a deal with only $400k guaranteed.

A better comparison would be LeBron is he wasn't able to go directly to the NBA out of high school. People would have criticized it, but it would have been the smart thing to do.

Good example. If that kid had shut it down he’s getting multiple millions more and is set for life. Turns out he might be a player and get paid anyways but that’s not really the point.
