Re: Luka Doncic Part III
Hey guys. Just want the feedback from people actually watching the last few games Doncic played in.
The guy looks as tall or even taller than some of his forward/center teammates. So I actually think he has grown to 6 feet 8 or even 6 feet 9? Especially, when I see him standing next to Reyes, Thoompkins, Taylor, Radoncic.
Has anyone else noticed this growth spurt this past season.
Also, no one actually mentioned how far the desire to be the best can take you. That, to me, is as or even more important as being athletic or explosive.
Petrović became the shooting sensation through sheer determination and hard work. No one can know how much Doncic is willing to put in to be the best. He has not reached his ceiling as some of you claim, as he himself has stated multiple times that he wants to improve a lot of his skills and shortcomings.
That is character, and cannot be measured through stats. I just get the feeling when I watch his games and see him talk, that that is where I think he has the edge as a rookie in the NBA, and as a potential no.1 pick.
His IQ is off the charts and any comparison to L. Ball are crazy to me.
Cheers.

Is there someone in the NBA (past or present) that you would say he compares to?

Yes, exactly. That's the main thing for me. He truly LOVES the game and seems to have major work ethic (that's a big part why he's already so good) and really cares about winning, not just winning, but actually even humiliating opponents (I remember several stare-downs after making nice plays). He also really hates to lose.
It's something that's extremely rare to see and something only a select few have it (to such extremes, obviously). Jordan, Bird, Petrovic. I have troubles finding anyone in today's NBA with similar determination and will to win and be the best. Ginobili was close. Maybe Westbrook, but he was never really obsessed with basketball. Maybe one could argue for Jimmy Butler and CP3, but here the list pretty much ends.
P.s.: This is also why he's still at #1 for me. Other top prospects lack both this and basketball IQ. Btw., without this, I would have Doncic at like 5-10th pick, if not lower. But then he also wouldn't be doing what he's doing in Europe.

Re: Luka Doncic Part III
Doncic is a top 5 ball-handler in the world for players 6'8 or taller, and now we have a guy who thinks he can't be a primary ball-handler.
Amazing stuff.

I think the answer is clear enough
He is being talked about because he has numerous Euro fanboys honestly. High profile Euros always gets talked about here. Another reason is that he is on 80 something game schedule, so he plays every other day, where college players play far less games.
Btw sorry for my typos full post, it was late and I usually write fast.
Anyway.
1st this is a USA forum, so majority here should still be Americans. So I think that argument doesnt fly, also people like Trae Young, Bagley etc they have a lot of fans are watched over TVs Doncic is not...and people who write here? Quite a lot of Americans also...
We are discussing this dude because he is considered to be something unique and all other international guys combined dont reach even 1% of attention this guy is getting... and there is a good reason for that.
You can hype people, but always hype comes from somewhere.
Trae Youngis hyped because he was a number one scorer in NCAA, had he averaged 15 heck even 20 points I dont think he would get 10% of the buzz he is getting.
Marvin and Ayton... good reason they are hyped. Mikal bridges and his stocks rising...again good reason...seeing he is practically the only top 10 pick left.
And Doncic?
European Championship Title
Euro League PIR leader
19 years yet tons of experience playing a really high level basketball
And so on and on... like always people will be looking for positives, then negatives and what not...but there is a really good reason why Doncic is being talked about so much

He does have a point though. if you look at several of the posters on here who are praising him and ridiculing people who question him, they have the Miami Heat and LA Kings logo on their profile, why? Because those teams have Slovenian players on it? I get wanting to see someone from your country succeed, that's great, but to like a team solely because they have a guy from Slovenia on it doesn't make sense to me. I'm from india, I didn't follow Sacramento because they had an Indian guy (or owner), or the baseball team that had the Indian pitcher. Granted those guys sucks, and Dragic is at least a good player (don't know jack about hockey so can't comment), but still. The guy is way over hyped as many of his fans are acting as if he does not have any warts and is the heir apparent to Lebron. he has skills no doubt, no one is denying that, but his weaknesses (speed, shot) are things teams should rightfully be concerned about.

I see a guy with an extremely high floor. He will definitely be an NBA starting level talent. What I don't really see is a sure fire all-star.

Very offtopic, but still, claiming moral high ground just because you picked some random team to root for is chuckle worthy.

Yeah, this one makes big sense.
Sports is all about about passion and here around balkans, we are proud of each and every Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian.
If you visited these parts and started to trash talk Dražen Petrović, for example, well, it wouldn't really bode well for you.
But yeah, you do you, we will do us.
That being said, not one person in these many threads claimed Dončić is perfect and without weaknesses.
But there are, in fact, some people who claim false facts and try to pass them as truth (cough 31% career high 3pt shooting, cough).
Differing opinion are welcome. Based on true facts, mind you. Safe to say that Luka is playing like **** for the last 2 months and probably wouldn't be worthy of the #1 pick based on that performance alone. He hasn't caught a break since August 2017. And in that 2017, he has flashed all there is in basketball.
Saying he's a white euro scrub akin to Rubio, Milicic, Hezonja, well, doesn't really represent the actual situation, don't you think? Not saying you said that, just picturing the toxic and ignorant sentiment in the matter.

Re: Luka Doncic Part III
To me, as someone said earlier, he is unique.
His ceiling is sort of a hybrid between Pistol Peter and Larry Bird. Is that potential worthy of a #1 pick. You bet!
And the claims that he is unathletic are just BS. Look at some of his highlights from this year's EC or even the last game against Valencia, where he had a quiet 10 points and a few steals. The first dunk that he does is sort of him going down not up. Freakin' amazing if you ask me. Just so effortless.
I think his athleticism or lack thereof is exaggerated as much as him being the next Lebron James. He is neither. He is unique.
In my opinion he has work to do on his footwork and jumping from one foot when attacking the basket to avoid blocks in the NBA, but otherwise he is quite the complete package. His shooting is fine. You'll see that once he comes over.
But as I said before his will to be a winner and sheer determination to constantly improve will set him apart from all other rookies this year. Ultimately. the GM's will decide, but I think it really doesn't matter if he goes no.1. Any team that takes him in the top 5 will have a franchise player to work with.
Not going to address the other comments as they are not worthy of a reply.

So honest question, are you going to support both the team that drafts Doncic and the heat? What if the heat trade Dragic? Are you going to start supporting that team instead? Players come and go, attrition is a way of life, so it's hard for me to understand supporting a team sole based on the player vs the team itself. Plus the days of a player staying on one team ala my fave ever Dirk Nowitzki, are long gone.
And yes, I've never called him a scrub, don't think he'll be one. I've been under the impression that he will be a solid role player, a guy every team wants to have in the mold of a Joe ingles, but my argument has been you don't take that guy with a top 5 pick, that's all. if he proves me wrong, great, the NBA is better with more superstar level players, but if he doesn't he just perpetuates the notion that those guys you mentioned don't pan out as they should (the Rubios, Hezonjas, Exums, and I firmly believe Ntikkinnia soon)

Your trolling in this thread is reaching new heights. You just got done saying in your previous post that shooting for him is one of his issues. Now you are saying you see him in the mold of a Joe Ingles. It doesn't sound like you have a clue what you are talking about, and frankly, your agenda in this thread is getting old, so take a rest.

I've said Joe Ingles/Hedo Turkaglu hybrid plenty of times, are they some world renowned shooters? They have solid playmaking games, especially considering their height/build, but are far from superstars, not sure how that is trolling.

Shoting as his weakness? Wow
30.6% 3 point shooter this year, not very good when you also factor in the 3 point line is shorter than the NBA one and he's playing against defenders that are not as good/big/quick/strong as he'll see next season.

Joe Ingles is 2nd in 3pt shooting in the NBA at 44.7%. So not only does it seem like you don't watch Doncic, but you obviously don't know what Joe Ingles does either. But they are both white, so I guess I see that parallel you're making.

Actually I never said they were clones, I said he will be the type of role player Ingles is as a wing who can facilitate darn well, never compared their shooting. Just because you're a mod does not mean you can throw the racist accusations around, absolutely absurd.

I didn't make any racist accusations. Just noticed you picked guys that were primarily shooters to compare him to, and both are non shooters. But they are also both white foreign players you happened to pick out. You've pointed it out plenty with all your eastern hemsiphere, players across the atlantic crap you posted as well.
