Would've been all over giving Jontay a promise at 22 for the Bulls. Pity.

Atlanta doesn’t want slow players, they want to run. The issue is a lot of teams want to run.

I think it's a fair point, but like do teams think Wendell Carter is going to run? Or Bamba?

Well if you watch Wendell Carter he’s one of the quickest bigs down the floor. And yeah, Bamba has that concern.

To be fair with Bamba, he's going to start breaks with his shot-blocking and defensive rebounding.

I wouldn't be surprised if he got a late 1st promise and still returned tbh.
has the skills to be a lottery pick and another year of college provided he improves his diet and conditioning etc
will not hurt his stock it will only help it in next years weaker draft class.

Is college life more conducive to getting in good shape than the NBA where he would have personalized training regimen, personal chef, etc? I kind of doubt it.

If the person is fully committed to getting in shape either environment is perfectly conducive.

I don't think so. A player doesn't even know fully how well conditioned they need to be before they reach the NBA. It's physically not possible until you play against that level of competition. Even NBA players after their rookie seasons often need to get in better shape (Draymond Green and Kevin Love two classic examples). You can stay in college forever and not know where you need to be even if you are committed.

For example as doordoor pointed out NBA teams want to run. Is Missouri going to run with Jontay and Tilmon in the front court? Not likely. So how is that helping Jontay get conditioned the right way, the way he needs to be? It isn't.

Well his brother can foot the bill for his new diet and will certainly have in roads to better training options etc.
I agree normally it would not be the smartest choice, but if he can get into the lottery next year given his circumstances I don't see it as a bad move at all.

Decision-making is about considering more than just the positive outcomes. At any rate I don't blame Jontay for going back because he probably didn't get a first round promise. I blame NBA teams for being dummies. Because if you are telling him to go back to school to get in shape and be a lottery pick, then if he does that, you most likely won't be able to draft him anymore if you're a good team sitting in the 20s.

Yeah I am guessing that wasn't said by anyone actually interested that would want to bring him into their org at a more reasonable salary etc and provide said training regimen like you are indicating would be more beneficial. My guess is that may have been the message from lottery teams and either he wasn't given a promise high enough in his opinion or the one he was given was to a destination he wants no part of.

Well if that was actually the case then I would shift more blame to Jontay's camp. Because he definitely should have taken a first round promise wherever he could.

Look at this year's draft. Diallo, Bruce Brown, Justin Jackson, Rawle Alkins...probably more I'm not thinking of. These guys need to just come out when they have momentum.

I tend to agree with that, but there could be more concerns than we know about / interview process / work ethic concerns etc.

Going back to school is almost always a bad idea imo. There's the injury risk, you're a year older, more chance to be exposed, and maybe most importantly there's a good chance you're not developing the most important skills for an NBA career. Certainly not at the rate you would with an NBA or even D-League team. This is especially important for bigs.

Take Jakob Poeltl as an example. You can probably consider him a success because he rose a spot or two above his projected draft position, but that extra year at Utah didn't help him in the pros much. Utah needed him to carry the offense as a post player, and he did. He became an All American because he was so dominant in the post at the college level. Problem is, almost none of that skill matters now that he's a pro.

There's just such a big difference in the roles of a big in the NBA vs NCAA. A large part of Jontay's appeal is his fit into the modern game, but I fear that he could spoil it by learning the wrong things.

I'm going to blame this dumb ass decision on Porter family handlers not wanting Jontay to embarrass MPJ by going before him. Jontay is a first round lock, possibly even a lotto pick this year.

Watched Nathan hale v Sierra canyon 2016 hs championship finals. Jontay porter at 17y1m was handling marvin bagley in the low post, dishing out dimes to open shooters, shooting from nba range. Massive opportunity for a team to have secured their future 5. Knowing bc, he probably planned to dump bayless for #26 and will grab roco 2.0 in Mikal Bridges at #10.

Disappointed that he went back. Liked him better than his brother and Bagley.

So it sounds like the Spurs and several other teams liked him in the first round. This makes me even more upset that the kid went back. He's risking so much and it doesn't make sense. If you wnat to be an NBA player and NBA teams think you are ready, go for it. Now he goes back to a school with a **** coach where he has to play with no point guards and a big man next to him. :noway: :nonono: :banghead:
