Re: Alperen Şengün
As a comparison point, take the last-place team in the Turkish League, Ormanspor. Now take the subset of their players who came through the NCAA, ignoring all their Turkish and other international players. They still have a lineup of:
PG: Tu Holloway
SG: Dwight Hardy
SF: Charlon Kloof
PF: Stanton Kidd
C: Jamelle Hagins
That lineup is still on par with the starting lineup of a typical major-conference NCAA team. Holloway and Kidd both had significant interest from NBA teams (Kidd actually played a few NBA minutes last year). And that's the absolute worst opponent Sengun faced all year.

Defensive highlights. Great anticipation, underrated quickness, a little mean streak.

What about Vin Baker as comparison?

Vin Baker's prime was before my time, but looking at his numbers he seemed like a guy who could score albeit not very efficiently and couldn't pass.
Maybe defensively it is apt, I'm not sure. I think Sengun provides a lot more skill on the offensive end. He already is a better free throw shooter than Vin ever was, and Vin was not a good passer based on his assists/turnovers and Sengun shows promise of being at least one of the top 5 passing big men in the league.

Speaking about comparing to players before our time, on paper he reminds me a lot of Alvan Adams. Excellent passing, good defense, good scorer and rebounder, and similar size.

He's a far better rebounder than Manning who wasn't good at all. Again offensively his shooting and passing should develop to be a lot better too.
Chris Webber with less athleticism might be a better comparison for you

This is the best one I've seen so far, even if Sengun has better passing skills. Baker made 4 all-star teams, same number as Derozan, Millsap, Sheed and Shawn Marion, players whom I think teams would be more than happy to have if they picked at 7 or 10 or wherever Sengun goes.
Where's the D?

By far the best comparison is Love if you’re talking about ceiling. It’s not even close really. Sabonis is the next best comp. Vin Baker was a 64% foul shooter for his career. Sengun just shot 80%. Not even close.

He's slow footed, which is a disaster on the defensive end for a big man.

So is Jokic and he's a passable defender because of his IQ. Sengun projects to be quicker, but less long than Jokic. Sengun had the same steal numbers, a better FT%, much better block numbers, and far better rebound numbers than Jokic did at a younger age. Jokic shot the 3 better and obviously his passing numbers were out of this world with his assist to turnover ratio which Sengun couldn't hope to match.
With his offensive upside he only needs to be passable on defense to be a really effective player and while I'm not certain he will be at least a mediocre defender I think he will be because of his IQ more often than not.

A comparison of Sengün to two other slow footed nba players taken in the lottery. These guys aren’t passing unicorns like Jokic, but good passers.

A highlight video from the rookie year of one of the comparisons.

That same player at 34 years old last year.

Oklahoma City is in an interesting position in the draft after falling out of the top 5. Presti drafted Sabonis and had Al Horford last season. He seems comfortable with the archetype and in my view Sengün represents the best talent on the board at 6.
Is he the pick or is it impossible to build a sustainable contender around a big who isn’t a better defender?

These guys are better suited as 6th men off the bench. If you build around them you can have a good regular season record, but you're done for when they are forced to the bench because they are repeatedly put on island by guys like Kyrie, Trae, or Luka.

Re: Alperen Şengün
Not to re-ignite the height debate, but here's a really good photo of him between Sanli (just behind him, wearing a white mask, 6'11" in socks) and Cedi (beside him, wearing a black mask, 6'7" in socks).
He's pretty obviously more similar in height to Sanli than to Cedi...I think if you look at video from a couple years ago, when he was 30+ pounds overweight and an inch or so shorter, he looks like an undersized slow-footed center who would struggle to find a role in the NBA. But his body has developed a lot since then, and that's directly related to his recent success.

So is Jokic, Towns, Vucevic, Ayton, Valanciunas, etc.
No one is saying he's gonna be Adebayo or Gobert on D.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

So is Zubac. We all saw what happened to him against Dallas & Utah.

Re: Alperen Şengün
I think his best role right now is to get drafted by Golden State and come off the bench as an energy big to start his career. Less pressure on defense and they could use his scoring and passing ability right away. If he can work on a mid-range game he can replicate some of what they got a few years back with Mo Speights. Then over time he can grow and develop a 3 and work on the defense. Personally would be happy to see us draft Moody and Sengun (if he's there at 14) and have them come off the bench with Poole.

GS shouldn't do that unless they are planning on offing Wiseman. Otherwise they are stuck with 2 bigs who can't defend in space.

We should dump Wiseman regardless imo.
