Re: Jontay Porter
So he wants to go back to school to make a couple million more on his rookie contract that he could've otherwise made taking the vet min with the extra year he saved from being drafted a year early.

I don't recall him saying this entered into his thinking.

Liking Jontay as 9 to 12 pick. I think he will be a good pro. Not a star but solid role player or even starter.
Jordan Walsh goes top 10 in a 2023 redraft.

I guess he wishes he'd have gone to the draft instead of returning to school. I'm sure he'd still get drafted if he declares but it'll probably be as a 2nd rounder.

Yeah I'm not sure why he went back. He was a guaranteed first round pick. Probably an 85% chance he would have been taken in the lottery, if that's the case, take the money and go. Worse case scenario you make it through your rookie deal. Now what? He either comes back and plays for free again to re-establish his draft value or he declares after tearing his knee. Whoever told him to stay gave him **** advice. Look at his brother, he's hurt but at least he's getting paid.

Whenever you are a safe 1st round pick you should declare. Never understood why someone would go back to college. Has anyone ever improved his stock significantly by returning?

His dad rolled the dice by asking him to go back to college so Michael can get all the spotlight as the only Porter in the top 10. Jontay was supposed to be next year's star in the draft. At least in the family's eyes. That backfired. Now he has one kid with a bad knee and another one with a bad spine. I understand one of his sisters tore her ACL too?

Re: Jontay Porter
Bummer for him. Assuming a full recovery I expect he will be a very good pro still. Yes he lost a lot of money with that injury. I’d still pick him with a late first though.

Re: Jontay Porter
Feel really bad for the kid, but that's why you have to hit the pros the very best chance you get. He would've been a first rounder easily last year, possibly top 20 pick, and went back to play for free for the NCAA. Didn't make any sense then or now because something like this might happen. Heck, it happened to his brother.
Really like him too as a prospect. Had him top 5 or 7 before this. Bummer.

We've seen more people lose stock than gain by going back...like Robert Williams for example.

Re: Jontay Porter
both Porter brothers are made of glass. It's a shame, but tearing both mcl and acl is going to kill his draft stock even if he somehow becomes a decent rotation player in the future.brackdan70 wrote:Liking Jontay as 9 to 12 pick. My best guess is Jontay goes undrafted next year because of this. And some team should pick him up fairly cheap as an undrafted FA.

Always get that guaranteed dough. I was pretty high on this kid, hopefully he makes a fully recovery, but he was never going to increase his stock enough to offset the extra risk. Especially with him being mocked in the mid first round, it might be a different story if he legit was likely to go in the second round but man, strike while the iron is hot.

Sigh
I've gone on a rant on more than one occasion why guys should come out when they are a lock to be an NBA pick. Sad they get bad advice from family and what not.

If I were a dad though, I'd rather have two kids making NBA money rather than one lol.
