Marcin Gortat may actually be a better comparison than Biedrins.

Biedrins is a pitiful post defender. Was always a softie. His mobility and speed helps him doing other stuff defensively, but he's not nearly as good as he could be there. And in the post, he's awful and not just because he isn't very strong.
Valanciunas is a ferocious defender. A bit too much actually. Once he gains some strength and experience, nobody will mess with him. Kind of player who loves to get stops as much as scoring a basket.
Agreed about the better offense part (that wouldn't be too difficult).
I think you may be over playing it a bit. Biedrins doesn't possess the anchor to contend with power post players, but he seems quite good at every other aspect of interior defensive play....or was before he completely lost his self-confidence at the hands of Nellie's inexplicable substitution patterns. I think if he had been paired with an enforcer type big guy who lacked mobility, he could have become a great one.

Lietuvos Rytas (Valanciunas' team) and Caja Laboral (beat Barcelona last year for ACB champ) play tomorrow. The game will be shown on ESPN3 at 2:45 et.
This could be the last EL game for Valanciunas. You better take advantage.....

Yeah the game was selected as the Euroleague central match as far as I heard due to importance. But this means that Valanciunas probably will play around 10-15 minutes. Coach could risk as Valanciunas is the best rebounder on the team without the doubt (and one of the better on euroleague if you watch rebound per minute rating) but his youth is the factor which will probably limit Valanciunas playing time a lot.
Anyways will be rooting for Valanciunas team (because it would ensure that I would be able to observe Valanciunas game for three more games at least, on Euroleague level).

Re: Jonas Valanciunas
I agree. He's not much of a central figure on offense. Most of his scoring comes from second chance baskets and pick and roll.
Nonetheless, he had a strong game today. He finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds. All of this was done in 23 minutes.

Re: Jonas Valanciunas
Yeah Valanciunas played longer than I expected and better. Correct me if I am wrong but I think he was also an MVP of his team tonight.
Valanciunas team coach made a mistake by trying to play that center guy who started the game because during it Caja shot in front and only when Valanciunas showed up they started catching up.
Valanciunas is still weak on a defensive end but I would argue that he is not a bad defender. He just lacks experience and strength. Other than that I like that he is willing to defend and to do it hard. A lot of players never use their potential fully because they dont give their all on defensive end despite having all the tools they need.

This kid sure looks like he cares, ALOT.
Those are the guys who end up having the best careers.
Very raw - but with the work he will put in he can be a great great player... other then his size and rebounding he doesn't have any NBA ready skill.

Yep he's loading up the stat sheet, but as one of the early posts in this thread indicated he's playing against guys like Luke Bonner's brother.
I see that as a concern.

Lithuanian league is not euroleague. In euroleague he is playing against really tough guys in there and still puts on good numbers. And luke Bonners brother is only a second center on the team of LKL (lithaunian league) so its not like he always plays against the crap in LKL. On Euroleague level the competition is really strong.
Euroleague is the league where Parker, Ginobili, Gasol, Scola came from. They do have some good talents in there.
Euroleague strong teams are now capable of beating teams like Lakers (of course need to have a good day but the level of difference isnt as vast as it used to be) like Barcelona did. Doenst happen all the time but the teams are getting there.
Against the crap players like Luke Bonners brother Valanciunas usually has 18-20 points and 11-14 rebounds per 20 minutes of gameplay. Thats still good numbers considering the time he spends and that he usually scores only after cleaning offensive glass or pick and roll (as Rytas team most of schemes run on their 3pt shooters).

Re: Jonas Valanciunas
Draft Express has him #2 overall. I don't know why the rest of the draft sites aren't higher on him. 70% shooting is insane, I don't care what league you're in. But to do that in the 2nd best league in the world....just wow. I need to see him play, but with those numbers I can see the guy carving out 15 minutes of PT as the 3rd big on an average (ie, not playoff caliber) NBA team. He has insane length, good athleticism and a knack for mixing it up. In a draft like this one, I don't know how that's not the #2 prospect after Irving.

Re: Jonas Valanciunas
I think DX has sort of a euro bias because they invest so much time and money scouting european players. So I think you'll see them rank euro prospects a little higher than they should be. Just my opinion.
