Thoughts on this kid?

6'2" Guard with some real athleticism and skill. Georgetown commit.

What's the potential there?

Undrafted. If he wasn't white no one would know who he was probably. I think he's a 3 Star by most services for a reason. PG size without the PG game. Can get hot from 3 but a pretty streaky shooter and doesn't play defense.

Honestly I think it's just really rare to see a white guy his size that can throw down the dunks he can.

I haven't seen anything outside of the mixtapes, but it's hard to believe he doesn't have NBA potential on some level with that level of athleticism. Duke sounds more informed than I am, though. Sounds like he has a long way to go with his game.

I saw one of his early mixtapes before he blew up. So of course I was thinking myself it would be great to have this kid come in right after Grayson leaves. So started doing my research on him and asking some people I trust on him and they basically said the same thing I was thinking when watching him. Take away his flashy dunks and you have a very average player that is undersized.

He is actually shooting the ball incredibly well, that's a surprise

well he was at 80% from the line last year, up to 92% this year at an even higher clip, 3 point shooting is up considerably too.

still kind of a crappy defender tho

I hope he gets a shot, will need to work on his PG skills and defense. He'll likely be at G-Town for 4 years so he has some time. I'm not much into the highlight vids, but he always seemed like a very upstanding and polite kid. Glad to see that he's been doing well in college, especially after that idiot HS coach told him in-game that he would be a benchwarmer in college. Here's my favorite dunk highlight (at 0:45) the reaction from Kevin Porter is so good:

I'm torn on him - On one hand, I think he's a helluva college player who's going to get even better. Otoh, I think it's gonna be hard for him to make it in the NBA, because he's not a PG at that size. I was actually disappointed with how he played last season - because he's such a skilled and under control player. Now, he's playing up to where he should be, and there's some more growth for him to come - probably not quite enough to play in the NBA, but if there's a kid that can prove people wrong, it might be him. And hopefully he helps save Patrick Ewing's program.

So many better PGs in the Big East than he is considering he is a PG prospect

no one should be looking at him as a pure PG prospect - hes a combo G or undersized SG like Monta Ellis, Lou Williams, Dion Waiters, etc.

Yup - even with no more Akinjo, McClung is still not playing the point.

which is why he should stay in school to continue developing his PG skills, that's gonna be key for him as a prospect

I thought the nba was 'positionless'? Why can't he be one of those newfangled scoring point guard.

It's multi positioned rather than no positioned.

Its good to see him shooting the ball more consistently now. But Im still not seeing a sure fire NBA guy with him. He plays 0 defense and is 6'2 (generously) and has 0 facilitating skills.

McClung needed to go to a coach who recognized that he was the best player on the floor and just let him be. He chose maybe the worst coach to go play for. He needed the Trae treatment and he would have delivered. Now he'll be lucky to get drafted unless like Divencenzo he has a great tournament.

bump - McClung is now at Texas Tech under what appears to be a much better coaching staff than he had at GT and has been very clear about focusing on improving his weaknesses in preparation for the next level. I think this guy is going to be one of the best scoring guards in the country this year, and if he can continue to show improvement with shot selection and distributing with the ball in his hands, I believe there's some real potential for him as an "instant offense off the bench" type combo guard in the league.
