Being a former journalist who once covered the Charlotte Hornets, I am well aware that the 2005 NBA draft happened before the Hawks acquired Joe Johnson in a sign-and-trade deal with Phoenix. But it was apparent that Atlanta general manager Billy Knight envisioned Johnson being his team's future point guard and targeted him during free agency, which starts shortly after the draft:

Kevin Johnson isn't "Michael Jordan" famous ... he's "Mitch Richmond" famous

He was and is an elite defender but what over hyped him was his clutch shooting in the tournament. He never should have been picked that high. There were some physical factors that came to light but overall this exactly why you don't let high floor meh ceiling prospects with stand out tournament play confuse their true value and why DeAndre Hunter will be the Hawks first pick if they haven't learned anything

I feel like Marvin Williams would be a player of an entirely different caliber if he was an upcoming prospect today. He arrived about a decade too early. He was drafted as a SF, but he's a prototype PF for today's game. With some added runs and confidence as a youngster, he could've developed differently.

Yeah and was a defender of both 3s and 4s most of his career.

Marvin was overhyped all year. I remember it well and this backs it up:

This actually wasn't that bad. If you close your eyes on the comparisons the context was sound.
