Matisse Thybulle Huskies DPOY

I am not sure where this kid ranks but he is a special type or player being able to put up big defensive numbers in a zone defense. I can see him being a decent role player in the NBA for a playoff team with scoring. Toronto would be a great fit since they mix in some zone and different schemes which he should benefit from playing in.

Watch on YouTube

He is a Junior so I would think he is likely to come out.

That zone defense is a nightmare to use to evaluate defenders. It's clear the has some Thabo in his game. I just want to see him in a real defense because if he was in it, he would be tremendous and NBA ready and that would make him easily a late 1st pick but right now, I have him in the mid 2nd. He isn't as NBA ready as I want an upperclassmen to be.

he's a legit NBA level defender but still quite benign offensively at this point...he'd be more sought after he short the 3 ball closer to 37 or 38%.

I'm hoping the Spurs get him with the Raptors first... I figure at a minimum, he's Andre Roberson. His ceiling could be a perennial DPOY candidate, with a functioning 3...

Was just researching him. He's a guy I could see OKC get, he looks like a Presti prototype and I like him a lot.

It’s funny how you guys just come in here and pretend like you’ve discovered him. We’ve known about him for the past two years and the arguments from then still hold up now. He’s an average NBA defender and the stuff he’s doing at this level he will not get away with in the NBA.

That’s part of it, but the other part is that he’s just kind of slow for the NBA. Plus there’s more space between defenders and harder to get passing lane Steals. Luckily he’s long enough where he can probably poke a ball or two out. But I strongly don’t belive in his individual defensive ability, I saw him a lot last year and I just don’t belive in it.

I would love for the Hawks to get him as an undrafted free agent or low second round pick. He would work really well with Trae Young and John Collins.

Some might criticize Matisse for his high defensive stats in a zone defense, but that doesn't hide the fact of his very high basketball IQ, which everybody admits he has.

One of the best in the most talent filled conference. I think he will go somewhere 15-25 and be a new age Doug christie.

The Syracuse zone (which the Huskies play) is notorious for boosting guys' defense stats, especially their steal rates. He should be producing crazy numbers.

Key thing with Thybule is that he was producing a lot of steals and blocks before Mike Hopkins was the head coach. In his first two seasons he had 1.9 steals/1.6 blocks and 2.8 steals/.9 blocks per 40.

Dalek wrote:He is a Junior so I would think he is likely to come out.

He's actually a senior. He has played 4 full seasons, so he's out of eligibility.

clyde21 wrote:he's a legit NBA level defender but still quite benign offensively at this point...he'd be more sought after he short the 3 ball closer to 37 or 38%.

He's a career 36.7% shooter from 3 on 499 attempts, and a 78% career FT shooter. He's not a great shooter, but he has a track record of being competent. Basically all of his makes are assisted, and UW's guard play hasn't been great the last two years, which I think has something to do with his unimpressive % right not, but when Fultz was there he shot 40.5% from 3.

His overall usage is still pretty low for a senior though, so yeah, he'll have to be elite on defense to make it in the NBA. But as doordoor123 noted, he's a little slow, at least for a guy listed at 6'5" who is nominally a guard. He certainly has rebounded like he's a guard and not a forward. Not a super exciting prospect overall but he's worth drafting and giving a shot.

The PAC 12??

What you don’t understand that? Half the nba. Half the top 30 players this year. Every year.

It’s the conference continually filled w the best athletes for the nba. Outside of the big 3-4 schools w a ton of nba players most of the rest are from the pac12

The PAC 12 is indisputably weak this season.

Its best team just lost on the road at Cal. Effing Cal, which doesn’t have anything close to an NBA prospect.

There is no case for putting the PAC 12 above the Big 12 and the ACC.

And you can't say "outside the big 3-4 schools." Teams in other conferences have to play those schools (at least) twice. Pac 12 schools don't. That matters.

The NBA pretty much plays zone defense now anyway. When you switch every on-ball and off-ball screen, you are playing zone. Frankly, the team defense concepts you learn in a zone defense are probably more helpful in mastering NBA defense than is playing constant man-to-man.

I'm talking about scouting for the NBA. The PAC is always the most important. Is again this year

Oregon state and Arizona state dropped the ball this year. There's just too many good teams but they both should've played way more consistent and be tourney locks right now. UCLA is an aberration or something else unexplainable. USC should be way better and Oregon had the terrible luck of losing Bol Bol

You are right that it's a terrible year for PAC teams to the tourney but are wrong to undervalue the depth and strength of the conference

I’m not undervaluing the PAC 12, just questioning your claim that it’s the most talent rich. When you look at where Duke, UNC, Virginia and Virginia Tech are sitting, both in the polls and in terms of prospects, the PAC 12 doesn’t come close.

In terms of prospects?

Yes three top 5 guys from Duke. And then what
Hunter 8-20
And each of the other 2 schools have a SG that might be 15-25?

PAC has Oregon alone w 2 guys better than the 3 other schools you named

UCLA has so much more talent than those Virginia teams.

Bennett is a stud of a coach. Wonder if he comes back to the PAC. I loved him at wazzu. There's a lot of talk about that style at UCLA and if that would work

You can’t yadda yadda away five prospects in the top 10 and 3 schools in the top 6. Be serious.

Especially when The PAC 12 has one prospect in the top 10 that could easily fall out and one school in the top 25 school that’s definitely falling out.

Getting back to the topic, I’m a Thybulle fan, but there’s no way to reasonably argue he’s performing in the most talent rich conference. That’s demonstrably false when you look at both the prospects and the teams.
