Paul Reed 2020 draft discussion

Paul Reed has climbed my own personal big board. He's just a can't miss prospect in my eyes. Length, mobility, defense, offensive upside. I don't know how he's not a lottery pick but it's complete nonsense that most mock drafts don't even have him going in the 1st rd.

Offensively unless he can learn to let the game come to him and that he isnt as is a first option not without significant shooting range improvements
than it will be difficult for him to ace any interviews without coming off as overconfident and irrational which are his biggest detractors as a prospect. remember this was a 3 star recruit who has done well and is probably worth a late first if an org thinks he can lose the tunnel vision and share the rock, of not he will fall to the mid 2nd. Great defender though so maybe I am wrong about that.
Maybe a comp could be a higher IQ Bobby Portis idk yet.

The key with Reed is fixing his jump shot. He appears to be working on it to take out the hitch. But it's just been a weird motion that looks even weirder the way he uses his guide hand. The question then is whether his shot is broken--like MKG broken--or if he can make it consistent going forward.
Otherwise, I think he could have an all-around defensive impact and an ability to play downhill that would be similar to a slightly less explosive version of Josh Smith. I love his aggressiveness and willingness to handle the ball in the open floor.
Clearly something is causing him to drop if he's really being considered in the mid-2nd round.

I have his ceiling at 20th to MIA and his floor at 45 to POR

I think the Jazz are probably asking themselves, which is more likely--fixing Paul Reed's jump shot, or fixing Jaden McDaniels' body and attitude?

Not sure if it's nonsense depending on whether the mocks are based on reliable intel, but I absolutely agree that he should go much higher. Love him as a prospect for a lot of teams.

Agree. The film on him and his draft projections don't match. Either he goes higher than projected or some GM is getting a steal.

Reed is gonna be a steal for some lucky team.

That shot is ugly though. Not sure you can fix that easily.

I think he goes at the end of the first round.

Even with the two year age gap I have him as better than Patrick Williams. Someone tell me that’s crazy.

Patrick Williams has shown flashes that lead people to believe he has a high upside. That said, Paul Reed is only a few months older than Precious Achiuwa, he has very similar measurables, and Reed has clearly shown a higher skill level than Achiuwa.

His shot is very easy to fix. He is definitely a top 15 pick.

His shot is really jacked up, but if he can fix it, he's interesting. I put together this little heuristic metric for big men every year and Reed is in some good company. Basically combines 4 stats along two axes: AST100 and FT% (as a proxy for offense) vs STL100 and BLK100 (as proxy for defense).

He's been my draft binkie for ages. Boston has a 14, 26 and 30 in the first round, plus 47 in the second (although, no way we can draft 4 players...)
Still...I'd be happy with him at 26, and mad if he slipped past 30.
I have questions about his offence, but there is potential there. But his defence looks real to me, and I think he could become a nice, versatile player.

I'm really having trouble understanding why Obi Toppin is like 30 spots higher than him. Everything except the janky ass shooting form screams NBA modern 4. I suspect he is much, much higher on actual NBA team boards than all the draft nerd sites.

Not saying he plays like him but I can’t be the only one who thinks he looks like Paul Millsap with the headband & number 4 on his jersey ? lol

This must be right. How could GM’s let this guy fall to the second round? In this draft? Makes no sense.
