Josh Giddey - 6'8 Aussie PG

Discovered him after Joe Ingles was raving about him on twitter. He's 18 years old and played a couple games in the NBL so far. Last night he had a 16/11/7/1/1 line in a double OT win. Looks to be a Kyle Anderson type prospect. High BBIQ, fills the stat sheet, questionable athleticism/frame, questionable jump shot.

Guessing lack of athleticism is the downside?

wish the shot taking/making was a little better but I've been intrigued by him, should find his way into the bottom half of the first round I think.

It's his jumpshot that gives me pause. I'm okay with the so-so athleticism because he has enough size to facilitate on a spaced floor regardless. But I can't deal with his lunging, catapult jumper. It looks like he's working on it though. It might be a lack-of-strength issue that he can work out as he gets stronger.

He's probably going to need to add 20-25 lbs and play at the forward spot. I don't see him guarding quick guards on the ball. No wonder Joe Ingles likes him.

For reference, Terrence Ferguson averaged 4.6ppg, 1.1rpg and 0.6apg for the same team (albeit different coach).

Made a bunch of posts about him in the international thread.

His point guard skills are superb, great feel/decision maker and a good handle, combined with great size.

The shot is a weakness, no doubt. Showed success in pre-season pulling up around the elbow and the occasional 3, but there's form issues he needs to continue to work on, it's a flat shot. I do think it is somewhat of a strength issue. But he has improved it a lot over the last couple of years and will continue to, I hope.

Athletically he is limited in some ways, doesn't have a lot of lift. He's pretty skilled as a finisher but is sometimes let down by that. He's pretty quick when he gets a head of steam though, loves getting down-hill off a pick and uses a bunch of craft and change of pace to get to where he wants to go.

His game on that above clip was better than the highlights show - he was really everywhere getting contested rebounds, loose balls, making plays on both ends - he really made his mark all over the court.

I think Kyle Anderson is a pretty decent comparison. It will be interesting to see whether he's a true 'PG' or whether he'll end up as a handler on the wings. He's played as a pure point up to this point guarding opposition PG's, but he'll likely struggle to stay in front of those types of guys going forward. Either way, he's a run your offense type guy.

First round pick imo.

PS - that breakdown video in the OP is mine, haha. Thanks for sharing.

Love the kid. His dad was a blue collar bench guy back in the day who carved out a nice career.

Not convinced he'll be great in the NBA, but if he gets stronger and a bit more explosive, he'll at least be a good switch ball handler on second units.

Fix the shooting, could be more than that. I just love his feel for the game.

Just racked up 13/10/8 with 2 x 3's. Looked atleast on par with LaMelo in this league.

Was good again tonight. Only had 5/6/4 in 25 mins, but produces a lot more than the stats suggest. There's a reason why he's getting as much burn as he does.. continues to play over Donald Sloan who has been a disappointment - 5 points in 19 minutes tonight.

Rebounding and passing are a given every night, whenever he scores in double figures it's going to be a big game for him. Needs to work on the shot, 0-3 and airballed one attempt tonight.

I do not know if peeps have been keeping up with this kid but he has really gotten better through the season. I think he is probably a lottery talent.

Giddey will go late first round (27-30 maybe even higher if scouts really are intrigued by him), departments love this archetype of player (big guard) it’s in vogue.

Lamelo without the tenacity/length slightly more composed at the same age.

Same weaknesses (Shot/Defence though I was never worried about Ball’s defense takes after his brother)

Rebounding/Ballhandling/passing/handling/creation for others is certainly very transferable. If he had an elite shot now your talking but he’ll carve out a nice role somewhere. Us aussies have a knack of sticking around if they are basketball players more than athletes (Simmons, Longley, Ingles, Mills, Delly, over Maker/Exum/Green).

Not concerned with how he’ll fill out that happens naturally can’t teach guard skills at 6”8”

He’ll be good one imo

I'm pretty high on the kid - love the fact that he's pretty damn close to ambidextrous.

2021 NBA Draft Prospects: March's Biggest Risers

Josh Giddey (Adelaide 36ers, PG/SG, 2002)

Not all risers in March have used the NCAA tournament to strengthen their draft case. Josh Giddey has improved his stock from overseas as he seemed to have turned a corner with his shooting before suffering a recent ankle injury.

He's averaging 14.4 points, 9.8 assists and 7.4 rebounds this month. But making nine threes in five games (plus more mid-range shooting) is helping him answer scouts' questions about his jump shot. He'll need one to score in the NBA given his lack of strength and explosiveness. He doesn't elevate high off the ground on his release, but he also doesn't need to at 6'8" while often matched up against guards.

Otherwise, Giddey continues to show off his unique creativity and passing IQ for an oversized ball-handler. His change of speed and direction throws defenders off, and he makes simple, smart reads while facilitating over the top.

For an 18-year-old in a physical NBL, he's demonstrated a convincing comfort level running offense while handling himself admirably on defense. Scouts are now starting to look at Giddey as the draft's top international prospect and a potential target in the late-lottery range.

Flying up my personal list. After he got comfortable in the NBL, he’s been lights out for a month now. The shooting has been there (improved 3PT&FT shooting) after the first 7 games. His numbers are every bit as impressive as Lamelo Ball at the same age in the same league going up against grown men with years of NCAA&college experience. Giddey would be dominating college basketball right now.

I like his upside over anyone not named Franz Wagner in the 5-12 range of the draft.

^Another near triple double, 13, 11 and 8. Made some awesome plays on defense too.

I honestly think I might have him top 10 at this point.
