Who will be the most overrated player of the 2021 draft?

Post#1 » by CptCrunch » Sat May 8, 2021 5:51 pm

Let me start with 2 takes. Feel free to bookmark.

1) Cade is not a #1 pick. He is not a point guard and can't defend in the league. You don't draft a prospect with mediocre ceiling (relative to a #1 pick) first in the NBA draft. Mobley is a far better prospect at a much worse position (Centers don't become stars often). Green is an equal prospect without any of the limitations.

2) Davion Mitchell is not a top 20 talent; he is a late first rounder or early 2nd rounder. The man is shooting 64% from free throw. His 3 pointer is a mirage, a unconscionable hot streak.

My mostly ignorant opinion, but I think Kuminga will be an awful Pro

Agree with #2 wholeheartedly.

But man, you don't think Cade is an NBA-caliber defender? Wild.
I was right about 3 point shooting. I expect to be right about Tacko Fall. Some coach will figure out how to use Tacko Fall. This movement towards undersized centers will sweep ng back. Back to the basket scorers will return to the NBA.

Have a real concern about Scottie Barnes. He isn’t explosive off the floor which limits his finishing and potential as a small ball center. He can’t shoot which limits his ability on the wing.

So many to pick from.

Jalen Suggs, James Bouknight, Moses Moody, Scottie Barnes, Davion Mitchell, Jonathan Kuminga and I am sure more I am not thinking of at the moment.

the problem is not that they over rated it is often the expectations are way too high way too soon by needy fanbases who expect instant gratification.
I dont think anyone in this class is coming in right away and turning their team around.

The top 3 Cunningham Mobley and Suggs. Not overrated they are all good prospects and skilled players but I dont think any of them will live up to their draft slot e.g wiggins and parker.

Jonathan Kuminga is my pick for most overrated player in 2021 draft.

Kuminga is the most underrated upside player given he has the Claw 2.0 written all over him

I don’t think Mitchell would be overrated he landed somewhere after pick 18, but considering it sounds like he’s legitimately in the 8-12 range, I think that’s a huge mistake

Yes I do. However, I made that distinction between a player that is not that good at all but being hyped/praised as very good e.g kuminga versus a player that is skilled but won't actually pan out as projected. In other words players that will still be considered "good" in the nba but not franchise caliber or perennial all stars. I think jalen green has the highest talent/ceiling in the draft in the long run but as it currently stands he is not as skilled as Cunningham or Suggs.

I like Mitchell, but he feels like he's going to get significantly over-drafted.

I think he can crack the top 8 for a couple of teams esp Toronto because there is a legit chance Mitchell is the odds on ROY favorite as a plug and play 2 way guard and if he does that he could be seen in the same likeness as older prospects when drafted like Dame.
It is really the only thing holding him back from the top tier of prospects...the age factor.
I project him going 9th or 10th

I don't get the Mitchell hate. It's like people looked at his age and FT% and came to the conclusion he's going to underwhelm without having watched him play.

Is he a perfect player? No. He's a crappy rebounder and he doesn't get to the line as much as one would think he should. He's also one of the five best players in this draft today. You can't fluke all those step backs and jumpers off the dribble from different areas of the court. That's stuff that only happens when you work on your game A LOT and improve. He's also a genius level defender.

Mitchell is a can't miss prospect. If anything, playing in an egalitarian guard system at Baylor likely suppressed what he's actually capable of. Maybe he only becomes Marcus Smart or Jrue Holiday, but he's a pretty good bet to be that level of player.

I don't get the Mitchell hate either. Who couldn't use an elite perimeter defender who can shoot, let alone create his own shot because he's got elite burst. Even if you think his shooting is a mirage at worst he's a back up pg (rotation player), and if his shot is legit he fits next to any superstar and can be a legit 2nd probably 3rd option who is an elite defender.
