This guy can move his feet. Has high defensive potential and is a good roll man. Curious why he isn’t getting more love.

older for a prospect and because they had a few talented bigs he wasn't afforded the minutes and touches to put up big numbers. In scrimmages and workouts he was a standout which is part of the reason he's my sleeper of the draft candidate. Every team needs bigs like him. Guys like Robert Williams, Claxton, Brissett, Holmes, Gafford and Wood can be difference makers as #5 starters or off the bench. I honestly don't see any bigs after Mobley I'd take over Sims. But because of his age he's likely going to be the 5th or 6th big off the board and some team will luck out.

This is my view too.

His athleticism is downright silly.

Imagine Holmes but a couple inches taller and more athletic. This guy is a push shot away. And he seems to have some feel from the videos.

4 years of college and you're still talking about potential?

Doesn't block many shots. never averaged 10 points all 4 years. never averaged 10 rebounds all 4 years.

He's so bad at basketball.

I’m not an expert at what’s been going on at Texas, nor do I care in the slightest. What I do know is when a real big man can move his feet and has top end athleticism. Put that in space, switching and with better coaching and teammates and you have a shot at a player. There’s a reason the mid-late second round exists.

Offensively, yes. Defensively, he has good technique on verticality and he has good lateral quickness.

There are other rim protectors out there that I prefer since they offer more on the offensive end (like Bassey and Queta) but Sims could work in this league. He has the tools to be a good defender and this could allow him to latch on to a team as a specialist.

Is he a Mitchell Robinson clone?

He is smaller than Mitchell Robinson. Mitchell Robinson is a 7 footer (maybe a bit more) with a 7'4 wingspan.

Sims has a comparable wingspan (7'3.25") but he is 6'10 which means that his standing reach is considerably worse. Actually, his standing reach measured at 8'10 which is just straight up bad. Some SFs (Ziaire Williams and Julian Champagnie) had a better standing reach. Matt Hurt (a stretch PF) and Sandro Mamukelashvili (a point Center/Forward) also measured with a better standing reach. Not sure what's up with that.

Oh well, his 44.5" vert definitely helps him defend and contest shots. Maybe he tanked his standing reach to up his max vert? Who knows?

Anyway, to answer your question, he projects to be like a player of Robinson's type. Defend and dunk.

Ok thanks….. so a Nerlins Noel, Tyson Chandler, Mitch Robinson type. In the right situation he’ll do well. Teams just have to draft him with that template in mind.

Yeah, that's how I see it. He could have a role in this league and if a team wants a rim protector in the second round then he's not an awful pick.

He almost certainly tanked 2-3" on his standing reach.

Yeah, that definitely looks to be the case. Keon Johnson probably did that as well. It explains why they posted such crazy max verts since they are calculated based on someone's standing reach. Both still jump out of the gym, though, which is what matters.

i mean yea, in that range it's worth a shot just based on the athletic profile but honestly his athleticism just opens more questions than answers...like why hasn't he been able to apply it in college? is it functional? why hasn't he been able to improve for 4 years at Texas? he played with Bamba four years ago, with Hayes the year after, and with Kai/Brown the last 2 years, at least 3 of which will be first rounders...he's been there for years and despite being the most athletic of the bunch there has been marginal improvement from him really and hasn't been able to relay it into a 1st round pick.

so yea, more questions here obviously about his general ability to play basketball at a high level consistently, his ball skills, toolset, BBIQ, role, etc...sometimes someone blazing the combine just opens more questions and I think this is the case here.

It is pretty clear that he doesn't have the ball skills of the players you mentioned. He is simply a very athletic guy that has learned how to defend the rim and possess some degree of defensive versatility.

has he? 1.6 blocks per 36 for a senior with his length and athletic tools doesn't scream elite rim protector, but yes, agreed that he has good defensive versatility overall.

He played in a switch-heavy scheme (according to the videos I've watched of him, at least, I didn't actually follow college basketball so I can always be way off) and he also played alongside other players who can protect the rim and block shots as you pointed out. So, that could explain this number.

Also, I do have to point out that defending the rim is not simply blocking shots but, again, I have no way to know what Sims' DFG% at the rim was.
