emoni bates,,,will he declare

Post#1 » by Lalouie » Sat Mar 12, 2022 5:04 pm

his stats suck in every major way
however
players are leaving early because that's what they do nowadays.

and scouts have a blind spot for talent they've been tracking since high school. players like that are given a long leash and the nba will convince itself emoni is a future star.

He’d be wise to declare, get drafted and go play in the g league where it’s easier to put numbers and maybe he gets a shot in the league. If he stays at Memphis he’ll just continue to get exposed and be lucky to be a second round pick at some point.

(Edit) just read the post above and if he’s not eligible, same thing applies - leave Memphis and go play in the g league.

I'd love him to leave Memphis and go play in Australia in the NBL. Get him on a team with veterans and he'd learn a lot very quickly about the professional game.

I've been pleasantly surprised by him. Hearing people talk you'd think he was a talentless future bust. From the games I've caught he has very high BBIQ, he hustles, is a leader, can make plays for others, is a willing defender and looks to have some tools to work with. He's so young! I have a feeling he's going to put up some very good numbers and be in the lottery discussion next draft. He needs more muscle and a little more explosion and he can make it.

The better question is how did scouts all miss his physical deficiencies in high school?

This dude is likely the slowest SF with the worst hops in all of the league. If you look at this Memphis mini-combine numbers and his on court athleticism, he is literally bottom 10th decile among NBA SF's.

Actually bad everything, negative wing span, frail build, slower than Duren in agility, literally smallest measured hands in years, basically cannot jump.

Therein lies the issue. People see that and his numbers and form a narrative that he sucks and is worthless. Two extremes. He’s neither the 5 star guy “scouts” claimed he was nor the bum casuals now think he is. Having watched him play several times I can promise you he plays/looks like he has sufficient length/athleticism to be effective. He’s a legit 6’9”, moves his feet well, hustles and has the BBIQ to make up for some of those deficiencies. And luckily for him, he can improve his athleticism if he so chooses. He’s probably been sheltered and hasn’t needed to but I’m sure this season has been a wake-up call. I wouldn’t be surprised if he transferred out of MEM. It’s really up to him and how bad he wants it. If he puts the work in in the weight room and trains to improve his explosion he’ll be in the NBA no doubt in my mind

There is obviously residual value. I'm just trying to connect Emoni Bates the player his junior year, #3 ESPN, #4 Rival, #3 247 senior year prospect with his play in college. There is a huge disconnect here. Is this another Skal Labissière situation?

Ive seen this before but never looked at his hand measurements. My god he has tiny hands for his size. Kenny Picket is getting killed for having 8 1/2 inch hands. Kenny Pickett is 6'3. Being 6'9 with 8 1/4 inch hands is crazy small.

from the hands to the wingspan to the vertical, it's almost as if those measurables are made up to give an example of what bad measurables look like.

Tiny hands period, you look at the combine hand measurements. He is among the bottom 3 basically every year. This dude has miniscule hands.

Ya I got curious after all the Kenny Pickett hoopla so I measured my hands and I have 9 1/2 inch hands and Im 6'1. And I have pretty normal sized hands I think haha. There is no way he can palm a basketball. How can you be 6'9 and not be able to palm a basketball?

Memphis becoming good the moment Bates stopped playing for them isn't a great sign for his future

I'm not gonna lie I bought into the Bates hype when he was in highschool.

After seeing his measurements I wad discouraged, but I thought man this kid is supremely skilled, he should be fine.

Fast forward to his freshman year... dude is not the same guy whom we thought he was. Moreso than his measurements, it's his play that has people discouraged. 10/3/1 on 38/33/65 (TS% is 49.5) shooting splits is horrendous.

Dude just looks lost out there and he can't keep up with the speed of college defenses. Imagine him in the NBA.

haven't seen anyone say that, just that he's been very overrated over the years, which he was. naturally the blowback is going to be hard against it considering a lot of people have been saying he's a generational prospect when he's not.

still most likely a lotto guy when he comes out but he's not a cant miss guy.

I will say that haha.

Either than height and form on his shot, really nothing much else about his game I'm a fan of. And I don't see any great potential with him either. His wingspan is tiny, his first step is non-existent. So with his lack of quickness and lack of wingspan, not seeing him every becoming a good defender (especially considering he's horrible on that end at the moment). And ya with his complete lack of a first step, not sure I ever see him being a dynamics creator on the ball. And his form his nice, but he's far from being a knock down shooter.

It'll be interesting to see how he comes out and plays next season. If he looks good I imagine folks will largely forget about this season and he could get pretty high (mid lotto). If he looks meh again (better than this season but not good)... Ehh, then I don't see him as a serious prospect.

i disagree a little bit there, he has pretty outlier ball skills for a 6-9 guy, a lot of juice in his handle, good CoD and highly coordinated overall, a lot of versatility to his shot too.

obviously there are real physical issues with him and he's NOWHERE near the cant miss guy a lot of people made him out to be, but don't think there's nothing there either.
