The Wendell Moore Thread (Duke)

Post#1 » by CptCrunch » Fri May 13, 2022 9:31 pm

I think Moore is grossly underrated. Moore's NBA position is probably point guard or combo guard.

Read on Twitter

Moore played SF his first two years. His third year, he shared offense initiation with Roach, Keels and Banchero. This is when his passing stats below up. Wendell Moore's passing stats are in line (with the not so good at passing) crop of point guards in college this year. He projects as a plus defender and was ACC All-Defensive Team this year.

Moore has good measurables for a PG/SG. He measured freshman year 6'4" w/o shoes, with 6'10.5" wingspan and 8'5" standing reach.

Image

Moore had a great shooting year scoring efficiently at medium volumes. His free throw percentage has been consistently high over all 3 years indicating good shooting translatability and potential.

The sell: Moore would be only a passable 3 and D prospect with average athleticism if he weren't a great passer for his size. The unique combo of passing + plus defense + decent shooting on a 6'4" wing with 6'10" is quite rare in the NBA. Based on this combination alone, I see him as a lottery talent. Wendell Moore, despite being a junior, is super young with DOB: September 18, 2001. He will be 20.7 years old at time of draft. Let's discuss Wendell Moore here so we don't clog up the Tari Eason thread.

Here is a mini-report on him with some clips. I am not Albert, not my article.

Best case scenario I can see him being Malcolm Brogdon. Similar size, length and athleticism. Played a similar role in college as well, in the big combo guard kind of role. I had more faith in Brogdon coming out because he had a bigger body of work playing at the high level compared to Moore only having the 1 year of it.

I think Brogdon is the better shooter coming out of college, but I think Moore is a little quicker. Passing I think they're pretty close as well coming out. So ya if Im taking Moore 1st round its with the hopes that you have yourself the next Brogdon.

But the negative with Moore is he doesnt have an elite skill set to fall back on. And to me that is always a dangerous thing. Having that elite something to fall back on is always a big time benefit (athleticism, shooting, defense, passing, so on). Like I can easily see Moore not being a good enough floor general to get plenty of time with the ball in his hands. I also dont think he is a reliable enough shooter to have the safety of being a 3&D guard to fall back on.

I would feel comfortable taking him somewhere between 20-35 in the draft.

Moore does not have the explosion, craft or shot versatility to play point guard. He has size but plays with zero physicality, so I am not sure how much that helps.

no chance he is a PG at any level. But he can handle, pass and has adequate BBIQ to initiate sets on occasion. He's going to be a really good and valuable role player. I think he's Derrick White 2.0

Big time sleeper. I wish he was 6'7" could be a really nice SF connector type player.

Ya, I think he is going to outplay his likely late R1 landing spot by a big margin. I think he can be a elite 4th starter who can give 15ppg on good efficiency, pass well above average, play plus defense and do all the little things that matter to winning teams.

Full time PG? No. But as a secondary guy I think he’s got real good potential. I’d love him next to someone like Trae or even Don Mitchell if Utah moves on from Conley.

Think he’d really blossom if he fell late in the first round to Golden State or Miami.

I need to watch him more, but I saw him as a wing (2/3) with solid 3D potential, like a slightly less explosive, but more skilled Keldon Johnson. I view him as a 1st-rd prospect who should go in the 20s of this draft.

I’ve seen him mocked to GS a few places and I’d be extremely happy with that pick. Could be a great fit with Poole.

You aren't wrong, it takes a keen eye to see that he has PG skills because Duke has multiple guys of all sizes sharing that role. He has some Pippen and McGrady in his game as far as being a PG/lead ball handler. He played the roll at Duke, just not specialized.

How high he goes depends how high you read his passing. If aren't a believer, you'll see him as a second round pick.

Some of us see him as a potential primary, good secondary handler.

His passing is very legit. He averaged 4.4 assists while sharing ball handling responsibilities. That's impressive for college. He also had a greater than 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. These guys never averaged as many as 4. 4 apg in a college season: Malcolm Brogdon, Victor Oladipo, Jrue Holiday, Draymond Green, James Harden,

apg for a season:
Derrick White 4.4
Dwyane Wade 4.4 apg
De'Aaron Fox 4.6 apg
Caris LeVert 4.9
Andre Iguodala averaged 4.9
D'Angelo Russell 5.0
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 5.1
Grant Hill 5.2
Alex Caruso 5.5 apg
Chauncey Billups 5.5 apg
Evan Turner averaged 6 apg and dominated the
basketball
Anfernee Hardaway 6.4
Tyrese Haliburton 6.5
Deron Williams 6.8

And just for the record not taking height into account:
Derrick Rose 4.7
Kemba Walker 5.1
Stephen Curry 5.6
Chris Paul 6.6

For his basement-lobby-penthouse in terms of role/production I'd go with something like:

Garrett Temple - Etwaun Moore - Josh Hart

I think whoever takes him mid to late 1st will be happy with him, while probably playing the what-if game with a few players that breakout potential wise later in the draft. He's a solid player though.

I like the Josh Hart comparison. And if he really hits, he could be the next Tyrese Haliburton.

Dude is shooting the cover off the ball in this pre draft workout!

I like him a lot. His ability to handle the ball and attack the basket at 6’5 will translate very well to the league. He should be a first rounder (top 20ish) but if my Raps can manage to get him at 33 I’ll be ecstatic
