Yeah I remember him. I bet $100 on Dayton to win the Kansas game with 10-1 odds and this kid was absolutely destroying them

Playmaking skill materializing out of nowhere has been a pleasant surprise. But is anyone concerned with how poor he is on the glass?

What's his calling card and role at the next level?

Calling card at the next level? He doesn't have one.

Role at the next level? He's a traditional back to the basket, rim runner big man. Nothing about him (age, size, athleticism, skill set), there's nothing that jumps out as being definitely above average. And he's not even in a power 5 conference - and he's not a freshman.

IDK, I might take him in the 2nd round. But guys like him are usually the type of guys you can just grab and sign to a veterans minimum type of deal.

pretty sophisticated, multi-faceted inside scorer, great hands + athleticism, a 2ndary unit scoring big baseline imo, shown some range as well and ability to score mid-range levels.

That's overstating it, IMO. He's got good athleticism for a big. I *might* say slightly better than average athleticism for a big. He's got lots of dunks, but that's because he's big and has faced an easy schedule, for the most part.

:45 gets beat off the dribble here when switched onto a guard. The guard then scores on him at the rim easily
1:15 this time a wing tries to take him off the dribble. Gets to rim and scores over Holmes pretty easily
Early in the 2nd half and there's already been 3 times he's been blocked inside, ..and he's not even going against that good of a team or any elite players

not overstating anything, he's WAY above average athletically. not sure what you're seeing. he's clearly NBA level athlete on both ends of the floor and is a freak converting around the rim because he has such strong hands and is highly coordinated/athletic.

calling him just as an average athlete is just wild. :-?

This is funny considering your posts about the Thompson twins.

he has a point tho - you discount people's concerns that the Thompsons are playing against HSers but bringing up Holmes playing @ Dayton as a dig.

Bumping this thread to reignite discussion on Holmes. Do people think he can be versatile enough to serve as a combo big--PF and C?

I think 2 of the big questions for his NBA prospects are (1) can he be a reliable 3-point shooter and (2) does he have enough mobility to remain a positive defender in the NBA?

He showed a much improved 3 point shot this season shooting 38.6% on 2.5 3PA per game.

Interesting snippet from an article in late January, so the numbers are probably not current here:

The advanced numbers further bolster the notion of Holmes’s growth as a shooter. His overall numbers on jump shots weren’t pretty either in Year One (17th percentile on jump shots, per Synergy) or Year Two (19th percentile), but there were some fascinating signals within that noise. Holmes ranked in the 26th percentile overall on catch-and-shoot attempts last year. However, he was already decent when unguarded (54th percentile), but the results were really poor when his shot was bothered (just the eighth percentile on guarded attempts).

That pattern has held up this year but with clear signs of improvement. Holmes ranks in the 89th percentile as a jump shooter and the 85th percentile on catch-and-shoot looks. He’s been slightly below-average when guarded (36th percentile), but lights-out when given space beyond the arc, ranking in the 93rd percentile on unguarded looks.

I'm seeing some encouraging perimeter defense in this film breakdown from last year with Sam Vecenie (defensive clips start around 22:20)

Probably deserves to be picked in the 15-25 range.

1. He has pedigree as a top 50 recruit.
2. He was absolutely good enough to get drafted last year as a soph so his age doesn't matter as much to me.

Probably plays center in the NBA but seems like a potential low-end starter in the right situation or at least a backup with upside.

I would have no issue with anyone taking him over Missi or Edey.

The way he moves has always reminded me of Derrick Favors. But Holmes has a way better shot and Favors was a better passer + defender. Younger Favors was probably a bit more athletic, but not a ton - certainly stronger, though.

consistent improvement all 3 years in terms of shooting volume, hit rate as well as FTr and FT%...he hasn't stagnated at all in development and if he was a couple of inches taller he'd be a lotto guy for sure (but you can say that about a lot of people).

i do like the Favors comp, decent call out there jax
